My sister's email:
I saw the guy with backpack on the train around June 22. {Friend} remembered that he was on the train when we got on at Cumberland. So he must have gotten on at the airport {O'Hare} or at Rosemont. He had a dark backpack on the floor the whole time. He was standing up against the emergency exit. The train was not packed. There were plenty of seats for him to sit down on. That's what got me suspicious. According to my notes, he was on car 2212. We usually pick up the train between 6:45-7:00 a.m. He was about 5"6' to 5"7', between the ages for 30-35. He wore blue jeans, a white t-shirt, black shoes. He was clean shaven and wore no jewelry. I saw him pick up his backpack from the floor and get off at Clark/Lake. {friend} was pretty slick asking to take my picture. So I sat at an edge seat with my back to him. {friend} took my picture and also was able to get him in the shot. She said that she will give me the picture once she develops the film. I wish I could hurry her along on this.
Opinions on who best to report these incidents to?
Also Laura, she was so disturbed by your translations yesterday that she was taking them to work to share them will all her lawyers!
And lastly, who do I report internet hacking to again?
Her Norton security alarm has alerted her to several attempts and they report the ISP addresses, how would she trace these?
Anyone can trace IP numbers back to the block assignment. As far as "hacking", there are tens of thousands of infected computers that attempt to propagate. There are also a variety of security & anti-spam servers that constantly scan IP blocks looking for exploited computers.
I'll have to remember that trick...
JP, in all honesty, unless there is more to the story than what's in the email, the guy on the subway was a non-event. I always stand up in the NYC subway, regardless of the number of seats available, and I always remove my watch and tie clip before getting on the subway to reduce the incentive for criminal activity. Why do I always stand? Because I'm 6'2" and a very solid 210 lb., and therefore, I am less likely to become a target for theft or harrassment when standing tall as opposed to sitting short. Second, in the event of an emergency or other "incident" I can react a lot faster from a standing position than from a sitting position. BTW, I've ridden the "el" between O'Hare and downtown and I've always stood for the entire ride.
As far as the closing of the newstand, things like that have been happening since the newstand was invented. The reasons could be loss of lease, insolvency/bankruptcy, illness, merger/consolidation, retirement, security, or beauracracy, among others. Now if a bunch of newstands and gas stations start to close, then you may want to head for the fallout shelter.
