Thursday July 08, 2004 6:06am Ashburn, Va. (AP) - An Islamic school funded by the Saudi government has scrapped plans to build a campus in Loudoun County.
The Islamic Saudi Academy already has two campuses in Fairfax. It wanted to open 3,500 student campus on about 101 acres in Ashburn. Now the academy says it will sell the land. County officials tell The Washington Post they have approved plans to buy it for $13.5 million as a site for public schools.
The Ashburn project was approved by county supervisors six years ago, after months of heated public debate. Residents raised concerns about Saudis moving to the area, and contended that the school could be a target of terrorist attacks. Others complained about the Saudi government's human rights record.

Did you guys see that the Hassoun clan was in a gunbattle in Lebanon this morning?
Two people were killed today in a gunbattle between members of the clan of US marine Wassef Ali Hassoun and people who taunted them as being American collaborators, Lebanese security and hospital officials said.
The shooting took place in the northern Lebanese city of Tripoli but not in the district where the family of Corporal Hassoun lives.
The casualties were not members of the Hassoun clan, which numbers over 1,000 people, officials said.
Hassoun, who disappeared in Iraq more than two weeks ago, turned up in Lebanon and was meeting American officials at the US Embassy in Beirut.
Journalists had waited all day outside the building where his family owns an apartment in the Abu Samra neighbourhood, hoping to meet the marine or members of his family.
Members of the Hassoun clan used cars to block the street outside the building at both ends.
Interesting how the Ridge press conference coincides with the end of the Europe OBL truce.

IMO, this story is far more complex than we see.
We see the tip of the iceberg aka the news reports.
Will be fascinating, from his desertion/abduction to his release.

And now this gunbattle - may be entirely normal for that part of Lebanon and not connected at all. But another twist.....
SYDNEY : A man who breached airport security and forced Sydney's international terminal to be evacuated on Wednesday will not be charged following a medical assessment, police said on Thursday.
"Based on medical advice the AFP won't proceed with any charges," she said.
"Due to privacy considerations it would be inappropriate to provide any detail in relation to the man's medical condition."
The man was taken for medical assessment late Wednesday after being apprehended by police trying to board a Qantas a flight to Los Angeles without a boarding pass, ticket or passport.
The security breach prompted a full scale lockdown of the international terminal and forced all passengers and staff who had passed through security to be rescreened.
The procedure delayed thousands of passengers for several hours. Police do not yet know if the man never had travel documents or abandoned them.
