FBI urges vigilance for July 4

WASHINGTON (AP) -- A constant stream of intelligence indicating that al Qaeda wants to strike the United States this summer or fall has led federal officials to urge increased vigilance during the Independence Day weekend, but there is no specific threat of an attack timed to the holiday.

Thanks. I hated to give up my previous tagline which was in support of Israel. However, in case there is a 'draft Hillary' movement at the DNC, I want as many people as possible to know what they are up against...

FDA Clears Medicinal Leeches for Marketing

148 Products Recalled with No Ingredient Statements

You might want to check the FDA site if you regularly eat sprouts or almonds, because there are multiple reports of salmonella in these products at FDA USA

I don't see why JR could not chop the thread(11) off after the first post by WOG. We would only loose a few hundred posts and it would be easy for him to do. Better than loosing several thousand.

ND THE BEAT GOES ON!

China Gears Up For
Taiwan Showdown
By Benjamin Kang Lim
7-5-4

BEIJING (Reuters) - When China holds war games on Dongshan island off its southeastern coast this month, its SU-27 fighters will battle for air superiority and back up an amphibious landing in a mock invasion of Taiwan.

Convinced that Taiwan President Chen Shui-bian will push for statehood during his second four-year term, China is readying for a showdown with the island which Beijing has claimed as its own since the end of the Chinese civil war in 1949.

Booming China wants to avoid conflict, analysts say. The ball is in Taiwan's court -- whether conflict breaks out hinges on how far Chen pushes the envelope.

"They do not wish to use force...This is not their preferred course of action. But they are preparing for worst-case scenarios," said David Shambaugh, an expert on the People's Liberation Army (PLA) at George Washington University.

"I've been coming to China every year for the last 25 years, I have never sensed a higher level of anxiety over the Taiwan issue than at the present time."

Chen's predecessor, Lee Teng-hui, has played down the threats and likened China to a "barking dog that won't bite."

Taiwan has apparently been emboldened by President Bush's pledge to do whatever it takes to help the self-ruling democratic island defend itself, but analysts said it may be miscalculating Beijing's resolve.

"The danger of war truly exists," said Wang Jisi, director of the Institute of International Strategy at the Central Party School, which trains Communist apparatchiks.

ElBaradei Wants Israel
To Discuss Scrapping Its Nukes
By Louis Charbonneau
7-5-4

VIENNA (Reuters) - The head of the U.N. nuclear watchdog, Mohamed ElBaradei, goes to Israel on Tuesday to try to persuade the Jewish state to open up its nuclear program, but officials said Israel was not ready to scrap its atomic arsenal.

Under its policy of "strategic ambiguity," Israel neither admits nor denies having nuclear weapons. But it is assumed to have up to 200 warheads, based on estimates of the amount of plutonium Israeli reactors have produced.

50,000 homes here out of power according to KUB. I'm running on a generator for a while, just to check power status and check in here.

nternet Explorer Is Too Dangerous to Keep Using
By Steven J. Vaughan-Nichols
June 28, 2004

Opinion: Although Linux & Open Source Editor Steven J. Vaughan-Nichols once used IE on his Windows machines, he now finds Microsoft's browser seriously insecure and endorses open-source ones instead.

OK, I confess it: I've used Internet Explorer a lot. After being a die-hard Netscape user, I finally got fed up with the sheer bulk of that browser and started using Internet Explorer on my Windows machines.

As time went on and open-source Mozilla matured, I started using Mozilla as my main Linux Web browser and as my secondary Windows browser. This past Friday, though, I started installing Firefox, the browser-only side of Mozilla, on every one of my production Windows machines.

Why? Because Internet Explorer, like Outlook, has finally become, to my mind, a permanent security hole that masquerades as a useful application.

Much More...LOL

I'm glad your OK. Heavy t-storms here today in NE also.

Wow, up on a generator and posting! It must be a phone line your using? Just curious if a cable modem or DSL(maybe?) works during a blackout, plugged into a generator as well as the computer. Usually a land line phone (I don't have one, just cellular)works in a blackout.

Lots of wind and rain. Power back now, it was off for 5 hours. A body got pulled out of the river at volunteer landing too. Don't know if it was caused by the storm or broke loose.

Thanks. We were worried about some of our trees for a while, and our roof. It was sideways pouring.

I was posting with cable. The modem powered up and connected fine. I've got dialup access at work too. I setup a Portmaster 3 on a huntgroup T-1. I've got marine batteries set up as backup power for my servers and internal phone system, so that's pretty much always working, unless something happens to the T's themselves.
