I'm posting this because those freepers who call me some kind of traitor for opposing the invasion of Iraq are now going to have to add Buckley (along with Tom Clancy and a number of military brass) to the list.

Clancy got added well over a month ago and Bill Buckley isn't GOD;he's an imperfect human being, who happens to be dead wrong about this one.

You can add George Will to that list, too. I think he summed it up very well a few months ago: "I supported this war when the subject first came up in 2002, and I supported it throughout its execution in 2003. But if I knew then what I know now, I would have adamantly opposed it."

You and now Buckley will be proven very wrong in history, probably in the next year or two.

Iraq was involved in funding and training al-Quaeda for 9/11, and Iraq harbored terrorists and Iraq was going to continue making attacks on U.S. and help channel WMD to groups with intent to use them against us.

We absolutely had to take out Saddam.

Churchill would have been ashamed of you for not seeing the nose on your face.

You're just an anti-Bush troll that has managed to survive for some reason. Every post I've ever seen you make is bash Bush, "Bush bad", "Bush sucks", "Bush will lose", "We need to warm up to President Kerry", etc, etc, etc.

Well, if you opposed it from the beginning, that's fine. But I'm a bit tired of these people who whole-heartedly supported it at the start, and now have lost heart. It's sickening that some seemed to think this would be over in a month and a Jeffersonian democracy would immediately flourish in Iraq. Talk about clueless! I knew it would be tough, take years, and I still believe it is not only worth it, but that there is no other choice to protect us from even more devastating attacks in the future. Face it, eventually, every nation on earth will have nukes if they want them. That's a fact.

You're talking to the wall. The Bsuhbots see nothing but perfection.
Bush let's in illegals,...
Bushbots: We have always been a Nation of immigrants. They do the jobs Americans won't do,...
Bush takes away our freedoms with the "patriot" act,...
Bushbots: It's for our own good! Remember 9/11,..Remember 9/11,...Remember 9/11,...Remember 9/11,...
Bush allows corporations to move overseas and still sell to America with no penalities,...
Bushbots: Strong super-companies are GOOD for America. There's PLENTY of jobs out there,...TONS of jobs,..REALLY,...
Bush takes us into a war with a country which was NO THREAT to us,...
Bushbots: It was for the (Iraqi)CHILDREN,...WMD? What WMD? We never said no such thing,..
Bushbots are just like the democrats with clinton: they will destroy their conservative values to support him; actually losing what it meant to be a conservative to get him elected.
Thankfully, more and more people are finally starting to see the truth about this "compassionate" conservative.

William Buckley wrote:With the benefit of minute hindsight, Saddam Hussein wasn’t the kind of extra-territorial menace that was assumed by the administration one year ago. If I knew then what I know now about what kind of situation we would be in, I would have opposed the war.”

Churchillbuff, I'm not familiar with your beef, but Buckley's " minute hindsight," reflections of "one year ago" decisions, and Buckley's stating "If I knew then what I know now" do not paint Buckley into the same corner of those opposing the war a year ago, when the original decisions were made.

There is a distinct difference.

Good that Buckley and Will finally came around. Too bad it took them so long to do so

Guess we should have waited just a bit longer; until Saddam had his missile delivery systems in place as per his secret meetings with Kim Sung il; and his chemical and biological agents returned to Iraq from their temporary storage in Syria. . .or waited a bit longer until he had in his hands even some nuclear surprises he was working towards as well.

I don't get it. . .this war is horrible; but can only imagine the outcome; had we just waited; and waited. . .for Saddam to comply with the UN regulations and to cooperate with UN inspectors.

Oh, wait; that might have taken longer - perhaps until hell freezes. These folks were getting rich; while they pretended to be serving a higher cause here. Taking money meant for poor/starving Iraqui children - well, they surely had a good reason, to do that. . .like getting rich beyond their dreams.Yep. . .just forgot that; but whatever. . .they should have waited anyway; right?

I don't know; is it just 'brain wiring' that determines which side of debate is 'right' or something else?

The time for opposing the invasion is history, we invaded and removed a blood thirsty want-a-be "king".

Add another one to the bandwagon. 4 years from now, when the Middle East looks entirely different than it does today, with a free and democratic Iraq, Afghanistan, Iran, and Saudi Arabia... and all because of Dubya's and Blair's courage and leadership and the professionalism of the US Military and its Allies in the UK and elsewhere, expect the mea culpas to flow freely. That is, if Buckley is still alive to admit that he's an ass.

I'm sorry you've felt slighted by other FReepers. That's unfortunate, and I hope it doesn't reflect the attitudes of most people. I hope you continue to share your opinions.

Chamberlain, taking care of a malignant tumor is always good policy. Iraq was a malignant tumor that needed operating. You, Buckley and Clancy have NOT given us any good, meaningful and interesting alternatives. Until you do...read my tagline.

What is the utility of this revelation--especially coming the day after the transfger of sovereignty. It strikes me as his desire to be talked about pleasantly by the NYT and Liberal elite on his way out the door.
