Canadian Election--6/28 Live Thread
Various | 6/28/04 | Free Republic

Posted on 06/28/2004 2:51:25 AM PDT by conservative in nyc

The Canadian election is today. If the most recent polls are correct, the Conservative Party of Canada may win more seats in Canada's House of Commons, setting the stage for a Conservative minority government. A new day may be dawning in Canada. But the election is going to be close.

Please use this thread for any early election articles that pop-up over the course of the day, predictions and news analysis, and, of course, the actual results as they come in.

Also, please post links to Canadian elections result sites here.

The Left coalition just got a majority. It is over I think.

I really get the impression that they9Canadians) feel like we're (Americans in general) the unsophisticated, poor relation that just doesn't know any better than to elect a cowboy and go to war to protect our homeland rather than trying to "get along." Someone to be looked down on and pitied.

Yet when I talk to them about their taxes, medical care (waiting months for an MRI, etc.), they're not happy.

What's that old adage, "Pride is the last thing to go before the fall".

How many more years should I write off news from this semi-French country?

The Tories suffered erosion in most places from the predictions, but they really tanked in Ontario, and the Bloc ended up about with what was predicted, after seemingly getting some more seats.

Yep. The Liberals and NDP can get the support of the Bloc on legislation dear to the hearts of all three. Looks like a Leftist majority well in excess of 200.

I am thinking that the Liberals will win fewer than the number of seats in which they have won or are "leading." This is because the rural voters, who are late to report, will trend Conservative.

And, I am thinking that the Liberals + the NDP will have less than a majority.

HENCE ... I am thinking the Conservatives + the Bloc could form governing coalition.

(Politics makes strange bedfellows, n'est pas?)

This is not what the Conservatives had hoped, as they had hoped to beat the Liberals.

BUT ... the Conservatives were never projected to win a majority.

So ... governing via a ruling coalition is pretty much what the Conservatives were aiming for.

Proportional representation. That's the one good thing I see coming out of this fiasco. No more Liberal majorities, ever.

Lets just place Canada with the Scandanivian countries, and France where the right is dead.

The worst possible result has indeed obtained. Canadian-American relations cannot be expected to improve, unless Kerry is elected. :)

Tax increases and social spending up the wazoo. Abortion will become a sacrament for the new religion of the state and prepare for a barage of anti-Americanism.
