Our 80,000 were already mobilized and ready to go.

For a different purpose however.

Whatever. I'm not going to go back and forth with you like a couple of school-kids. We wanted a joint command structure and matching US and Turkish forces. You said no. Then you started to wave the wads of cash/ credit. Gimme a break.

"If the terrorists behead their Turk prisoners, will the Turks, as a people, strike back?"

The term "blood feud" comes to mind.

"Or are they, as a people, similar to Americans who have been coddled by good times into forgetting how to be outraged?"

No, though they might capitulate - with loud proclamations of how they hate the Evil Americans - in the hopes of being left alone. Which is different than your suggestion in that they would be knowingly pretending they're not outraged. The truth of the situation is that nobody who doesn't want a worldwide Utopia like the one recently removed from Afghanistan will be left alone.

Or is this move some kind of 'inside politics' deal with Shiite vs. Sunni?

It's always been my understanding that cranking up the Turks is not very intelligent--and the same goes for the South Koreans.

While the SKorean move was understandable, this one is not.

Any insight from Istanbul news sources that you can bring?

Fitz, it's worth remembering that some Christians are NEVER going to be on holy cards, nor declared Saints. Al Capone was most likely baptized a Catholic.

I don't claim to know much about the Koran, but it would be VERY hard to believe that that book prescribes killing Christians and Jews (and all the rest....) when one feels the need to do so.

I agree with you in thinking they will let the prisoners go free. #1- they are Muslim and #2- they did not have their hands tied in the picture. They tie the ones they intend to behead. The Japanese kids that were in on the kidnapping were not tied and were released. If those untied Turks were sure of being beheaded the three of them would jump their capturers and fight it out to the death. I think they believe they will be freed. Of course all that is just my armchair intuition. BTW, my neighbor, Hassan, is in Turkey as we speak. He goes home every summer to visit. This time he took his American wife. I'm watching the house for them.

And no, they will not be freed because they're Muslim. They'll be freed or not depending on which is most profitable to the terrorists holding them. Excuses fitting Sharia will be made to absolve either scenario.

The head terrorists themselves aren't typical representatives of religious piety. Most of them could care less about religion at all. It's a means to an end. They talk the talk only to recruits to gain THEM personal power and riches.

We wanted a joint command structure and matching US and Turkish forces.

And we wanted a Northern front without political ankle biters, nipping at Dad's ankles for political attention, thus we saved $30 billion, performed a mission admirably, and our agenda in Iraq is moving forward.

Related, I suppose, to the Kurds' territorial-integrity question...?

Everybody, citizens and other folks, there in Iraq all need to be armed for self defense. It is better to go down defending yourself rather than being a pansy getting your head removed over your objections.

Merahaba (sp). I hope all is well. My comments...

Educate yourself about my country, and my people,...

I have. Lived in Istanbul and Ankara for over a year.

... and our history and political situation first;

Done. And am much impressed (not with all of Turkish/Ottoman history).

and then you can judge us.

I cannot judge, but will offer a positive view of Turkey and her people. From the Army to the diplomats, good people and a friend of the U.S.

My problem is with not allowing passage to the 4th ID March of 2003. An issue that caused a problem within a great friendship. Imo, it caused Coalition casualties. At least from my perspective.

I hope the relationship between the two allies will continue to be warm.

Do you have proof of that? I think most turned to the Koran right before they became terrorists. I read Zarqawi himself did just that --- became very "religious" and studied the Koran. When they should "allah akbar" it is their god they're praising and in whose name they are doing the beheading.

They don't have the orange suits on --- I wonder if that's a sign these will be spared. Plus they're of the same belief system so would likely be spared to teach the world that Muslims will live but Christians and Jews won't be spared.

"I am 100% sure I read in my translation of Koran 'Tolerate the other people of book (Christians and Jews), try to persuade them that God (Allah) sent their books to them, and Koran is the last one he sent; but if they do not accept, don't force them unless they are attacking you.' "

That depends. Too many sura are open to interpretation by clerics who may or may not have genuine piety at heart. Too many Hadiths have replaced the suras of the book itself and are quoted so frequently that they're taken for actual parts of the Qu'Ran. Are infidels analogous with the "idol worshippors" of the Qu'Ran? Why can Muslims not take Jews and Christians as friends (they are friends of each other. Those of you who make them his friends is one of them. God does not guide an unjust people.)? Is this tolorance? We ARE of The Book, after all.

As you're speaking to a groups of people who only 3 years ago realized they're under attack, those questions are more important than they seem. Your words would be helpful. I get tired of being flamed as a terrorist apologist.
