Amongst mounting allegations of accepting bribes from state contractors, Governor Rowland, A republican who held the state house for 10 years announced his resignation today.
My opinion: he never should've resigned. He should've been thrown out of office by the people who put him in.
As many of you know, I volunteered for Rowland's Campaign in 1994. n 1990 former Republican Lowell Weicker, who was recently replaced in the Senate by Democrat Joe Lieberman, was elected as an independent. Prior to 1990, Connecticut did not have a state income tax and neither John Rowland (who was running on the Republican ticket) nor Lowell Weicker said they would implement one. Weicker won and shortly afterward announced his support for a state income Tax. Since the state legislature was controlled by Democrats he had no problem getting it through. He remained unpopular for the remainder of his term, chose not to run for a second term and quickly moved to Virginia shortly after his term expired.
John Rowland easily won the election of 1994. However, he did nothing to remove the state income tax which still exists to this day.
Typical of most Republicans who replace Democrats (or in this case a former Republican who embraced Democrat ideas) John Rowland became the career politician. The person who does nothing as to not create any waves, who lets bad laws and policies stay on the books because its too uncomfortable to put up a fight.
Unfortunately, the state Republicans kept nominating him and the people of the state kept electing him. And they'll elect a do nothing politician of either party again and again.
I no longer live in Connecticut, and I don't miss it.
" I no longer live in Connecticut, and I don't miss it. "
That makes two of us ! I was born in Willimantic - a.k.a. as " heroin town " . Was a nice place until the early 70's .
Hasta la bye bye, turkey.
If he were a 'Rat, he'd no doubt still be in office.
When the next election comes around, Ct. will elect a rat governor and we will not see a Republican in that office for as far as the eye can see. The only good thing about this is that that state is long gone to the rats anyway. It doesn't do us any new harm.
