"On Sunday, The Dallas Morning News will begin publishing the results of a major yearlong investigation into a largely uncovered aspect of the Catholic sex abuse scandal. The series of stories are international in scope, and will make headlines nationally and overseas. I’m not at liberty to disclose details yet, but I’ve seen advanced copies of the articles, and they are devastating. I believe at this point, more details will be available on Friday morning, when one of the reporters on the series does an interview on National Public Radio’s “Morning Edition.” The stories will be available on the dallasnews.com website starting either late Saturday night or early Sunday morning.
I expect these stories to dominate conversation among concerned American Catholics next week, and into the early summer (because there will be much more to come; next week’s series only reveals part of what our reporters have uncovered and documented). These findings give lie to the claim from Church officialdom that this scandal is over. The cover-up continues."
Rod Dreher confirms:
"Not only stories, but photographs. I’ve seen the planned cover of Sunday’s DMN. The picture they’re going to run is a jaw-dropper...I hate to tell you this, but the bishops already know. They have known. They hoped you and I wouldn’t find out. That’s part of the story... Also, our people are now talking to national media about this. Starting Friday night, you might be seeing stuff about this. I’ll let Dom and others know if any early media appearances are scheduled."

I am going to post here one more time. Not for you sinkspur, who understand the matter. Or for the other very kind freepers who have freepmailed me.
I will re-state the facts one more time and then leave this ugly thread. As an explanation, I have gone back to re-read every word I have posted on this thread. I have mis-typed 7 instead of 8 which is a typo I am even now correcting as I type. I don't claim to be a worldclass typist.
When I was 8, JFK was killed. I returned home to find my father leaving the house and the family. Within one week, Father John came to the house and told my mother she could no longer receive the sacrament.
She stopped going to the Catholic Church and instead we became Episcopaleans. When I was 13 she married a man whose father and whose brother were Episcopal priests. We are relatively happy in our church although I miss the Catholic church still and occasionally attend.
St. Mary's church has frequently run "Come Back Home" sort of reunions for divorced families, trying to get them to come back to the church.
That some churches did not permit abandoned, separated or divorced men and women to attend church is beyond dispute. Any priest you ask will tell you this was true, provided he is over 50 years old and remembers the bad ole days.
Did all priests do this? No. Some turned a blind eye. Our did not. An article I read recently, from the Church, said that there had been much misinformation about this matter through the years. Some priests have misinterpretted the churches position on this matter AND the article said that most people did not understand the policy BEYOND that which their priest told them.
For those freepers who think I am lying, I have been around here long enough that those who know me know this is not the case.
If you have an agenda that gives you a kick to call me a liar, go for it. You have my sympathy. You do not do your faith any credit. But go for it. Then go to confession and admit you have acted like a bully and have been cruel.
Which is why the priest should have knocking on the door to offer the children some support instead of turning them away.

You should stop now. Your postings have no relation to Peach's situation, and you are propagating the stereotype that Catholic teaching is cruel and heartless.

More than likely, Peach's dad told the priest some whoppers about Peach's mom sleeping around or failing to fulfill her marital duty, and blamer her for "being the cause for the breakup of the marriage and the failure to be reconciled when possible" and the poor priest bought the story hook line and sinker. So he dutifully marched over and told her mom not to receive.
More than likely, this is the simplest, most plausible answer.
And Peach's 4 decade old sniping IS suspicious. I suspect there's much more to this story, probably what I said above, and peach's REAL issue is that old priest took her dad's word over her mom, and this is feminist revisional projection by Peach on the entire Church.
Either way, Peach's condemnation and rejection of Catholicism based on her story rings hollow to me, and probably is rationalization for other disagreements, probably feminist or sexual in nature, with the Church.
As for your statement that "some of what [I] posted was just plain wrong," well, back it up, chief. Back it up.

Their colorful history and how they conduct themselves internally (abusing kids) tells me their words don't match up with their deeds.

Back in the 50s and 60s, some priests said ridiculous things; some still do. You can always come home!

They still get away with it a great deal on liturgical matters.
She's mad at the Church for the way a priest treated her mother. I don't blame her. A similar thoughtless priest insulted my father, who left the Church over that remark.
The Pope has the moral authority to say whatever he wants, but he was wrong about the Iraq war, and continues to be.
The Church exercises its moral authority primarily in areas of faith and morals. When the Pope gets into political considerations, he's less likely to bring moral credibility to the issue.
She has reiterated her story, as she remembers it. To deny that many priests discouraged divorced and separated Catholics from receiving the Eucharist prior to Vatican II is to simply ignore reality.
I have yet to meet ANY self proclaimed Christian who IS a poster boy for Christianity. Any who think they are would be guilty of false pride.
And there is enough sniping by both sides on this thread that your singling out someone on the Catholic side for criticism speaks volumes about YOU, not me.
