Two GIs Killed in Attack on Base in Iraq

BAGHDAD, Iraq - A rocket slammed into a U.S. logistics base near the city of Balad Wednesday afternoon, killing two U.S. soldiers and wounding 21 people, the military said.

Fourteen of the injured were taken to the U.S. Army's 31st Combat Support Hospital and seven were treated at a clinic on the U.S. base, known as Camp Anaconda, according to a military statement.

Balad is 50 miles north of Baghdad.

TWO SOLDIERS DIE IN ROCKET ATTACK IN BALAD

LSA ANACONDA, BALAD, Iraq - Twenty-three people were injured as a result of a rocket attack here at approximately 1 p.m. today. Two Soldiers, who were injured, died of their wounds.

Fourteen injured were evacuated to the 31st Combat Support Hospital in Balad and seven injured were treated at the troop medical clinic.

The names of the deceased are being withheld pending next-of-kin notification.

17 June UPDATE: THIRD SOLDIER DIES FOLLOWING ROCKET ATTACK

BALAD, Iraq - A third Soldier has died of wounds resulting from a rocket attack here at about 1 p.m. June 16.

One Soldier died at the scene; the second and third Soldiers died of their wounds at the 31st Combat Support Hospital.

Twelve other Soldiers injured in the attack were also taken to the 31st Combat Support Hospital. Eleven injured were treated at the troop medical clinic.

The names of the deceased are being withheld pending next-of-kin notification.

Most of the journalists in theatre are too cushy at the hotel and get their news from someone else. There is no real focus on getting the news and reporting it, but there is a realo focus of propagandizing the events.

Concord soldier hurt in Iraq rocket attack

The rocket attack at Camp Anaconda in Balad wounded 25, including two civilians.

Hopkins said his son told family that the rocket attack occurred at the PX of the sprawling base, which is about 50 miles north of Baghdad.

About 17,000 troops are based there.

Good point. IMO, if we leave in 3, 5, or 10 years from now and there is even one man left alive and standing in Fallujah, they willl claim victory and that man will have legends, lore and songs written about him and how he drove our the Americans.

Jerry Pournelle is about the only person I can think of, who was against a war on Iraq, for whom I have any repect. And I have a *lot* of respect for Pournelle.

Immediately post-9/11, he proposed monuments. Something like this may still come to pass. It sounds extreme now; it may not one day.

As it turns out one of the dead soldiers was a friend of my wife's. He was in my old unit and her last two units.

Sad part is he was only hours away from coming home. He had just left the PX after making hotel reservations for he and his wife to have a little honeymoon when he got back home.
