AP: Classes Train GOP Convention Protesters
Associated Press ^

Posted on 06/15/2004 3:46:04 PM PDT by ssaftler

NEW YORK - Passing up road trips, beach vacations and barbecues, thousands of anti-Bush demonstrators are heading to summer school to learn how to stage successful sit-ins and what to do if pepper spray burns their eyes. Welcome to Convention Protesting 101.

Before the GOP convention begins Aug. 30, veteran activists will train protesters in street tactics, legal issues, public relations and first aid. Their aim: creating a force of demonstrators to carry out safe and organized protests.

"When you're protesting in New York City," said John Sellers, the director of a California-based group that trains activists, "you're definitely in the big leagues."

As city officials weigh which protest groups will get permits for official events, activists are quietly learning how to block doorways or street intersections and when to use passive body language — such as sitting down — to disarm police officers trying to make an arrest.

Trainers say they aren't urging protesters to break the law. But arrests are inevitable, and protesters are also offering legal training.

"The Republicans would love to have images coming out of New York City that make them look like the reasonable ones, like they're about responsibility and law and order and creating a safe society, and that the left was unreasonable and violent," Sellers said. "If we don't recognize that, then we're not being very strategic."

The instruction includes skills for responding to rogue protesters intent on causing lawlessness. Veterans expect thousands of untrained demonstrators to swarm city streets.

Sellers' group, the Ruckus Society, founded in 1995, will hold at least one weekend training camp this summer. Using many of the same principles, local activists are already gathering in churches, homes and public places throughout the city to teach classes, which will increase in frequency as the four-day convention approaches.

Can we use the RICO laws?
At the very least, this is conspiracy to break the law.

Barbra Streisand!

When the 1968 protestors went to Chicago, they brought guns because they figured something "may go down". I say this because I heard a radio interview with the remnants of the Chicago 7 (and they were still calling each other "comrade"). For all of the "anti-gun" rhetoric from the left, there was no condemnation on them bringing guns on a plane to go across state lines to organize a riot.

This was the same rent a mob that also showed up to protest the 2000 election and the Iraq war last year.

They have tried to build up a big mailing list so that they can quickly form a response mob.

New tactics include "random protests". They play phone tag or send out pager messages to meet in some place (like a public park) and do some apolitical joke gathering (like 50 people) and then quickly disperse. I think this is merely testing the waters to see what the response time is. There was at least one FR thread about this tactic.

First ask the Boston City Council and Boston PD.

Then ask the NYPD.

Boston is shutting down the whole area to any protestors period.

The DNC and Kerry and Kennedy want no protestors within camera range.

There are setting up a remote area for a very few.

Very few.

NYC is a target for the radical nutzies in NY, the US and abroad.

NYC is also a prime target for OBL as Kerry is his endorsed candidate.

The NYPD will not play with any RUCKUS scumbags.

Rikers Island is not Coney Island.

If you cannot comprehend why crowd control in a congested urban area during planned violent demonstrations by nutcase unknown radicals against the Republicans then nobody can explain it or convince you it is needed.

View the TV videos of these creeps attacking an NYPD LEO on his horse and what they did to the horse.

If that does not educate anyone they are hopeless.

OK - Dumb question here...just what the hell are they protesting against? Is their quality of life so utterly terrible that they feel the need to waste more taxpayer dollars by staging these demonstrations? And blame Republicans for EVERY ailment know to man?

I have a feeling NYC cops will not tolerate much from these maggots - especially in light of 9/11. Cuff 'em and stuff 'em.

Friggin' hippies and wanna-be hippies. Just ship them all to France; there they can wallow in their own self hatred and get off on their self percieved worthiness. It'd be their utopia, right?

The NYC networks have the videos.

I saw them at the time, one nutcase violently attacked the horse.

If I had been riding that horse I'd have shown those creeps how a cutting horse moves a bad Brahma steer.

One of their "tricks" is to spray police horse's eyes with pepper spray. Some Enviro-Nutzies!

The NY Post and NY Daily News had ful color front pages of those NYC riots by RUSKUS and A.N.S.W.E.R. and even MoveOn.borg.

After 911 in NYC and the Philedelphia and Seattle RUSKUS anarchist violent riots don't expect a gentle hand from Bloomberg, the NYPD, the FBI, and the Secret Service.

Response will be fast and any protestors crossing barriers will be dealt with firmly and swiftly.

The agenda is typically to attack the police and then fake being attcked by the police for the liberal media.

Recall in Miami, Florida that screwball lib woman reporter throwing rocks at pedestrians, cars, and LEOs to get live TV video footage for her big nightly scoop?

The NYPD is the very best in handling these situations.

Radicals are saying if they do not get NYC permits they will break the law and have marches and protest anyway.

They are shopping for those typical radical leftie NYC judges to get a court order for them to be allowed to "protest".

Kelly will put the boots to that dream.

Expect to see some very large police dogs in NYC.

Read the other posts about businesses and police cars torched by RUCKUS.

RUCKUS has trained in NC.

They are going to be hunted soon in NC.

BATF and FBI are all over them.

Note they are not screaming about getting "permits to protest" in Boston.

I wonder why.....

Maybe NYC should open a Job Fair on the street? How do these people get off from work to participate at these protests? How many of them will be wearing suits? It always amazes me as to how they can support themselves for these road trips that they have to make. I don't think the revolutionists and the hippie crowd impresses anyone any longer.

That really depends on a number of factors.

Like, are the "demonstrators" being guarded by Justin Volpe, or not?

John Timoney should have really been the police commissioner for New York City. He was a deputy here for a long time before being hired by Philadelphia. Now, I think he's down in Miami kicking ass and taking names. The guy is truly one of a kind. The only analogy I can make is to William Bratton.

The "Chicago 7" were a bunch of political anarchists bent on creating as much havoc as inhumanly possible. This "the fuzz went apes*** during the '68 Convention" crap is hogwash. No matter how many times certifiable nut-jobs like Todd Gitlin try to peddle this theory, they will still be lying through their teeth. If these people were legitimate "dissidents", then they would not have been defended by that commie William Kunstler.

The best part of the GOP convention-at least in my opinion-actually occurred outside of the gathering place. I'm thinking of the police chase/old school beat down of a particularly noxious criminal who was resisting arrest.

I know that the dolts who watched this on the six o'clock news, while leisurely scratching their butts and helping themselves to yet another serving of potato chips, didn't grasp the humor of this situation, but I thought it was hilarious.

When that plainclothes, black police officer jumped over his colleagues' squad car and started administering some "Philly street justice" to Mr. perp...well, I just about bust a gut laughing.

Jackin' perps and beatin' on hippies has to be one of my favorite all-American pastimes.

No problem.

Sometimes I just have an overpowering thirst.

And the only thing that can quench that thirst is ceaseless ridicule of those socialist dip-wads.

Gimme some ridicule on the bass baby!

YEAH BABY!

Just in case you were wondering, that was an oblique reference to a Christopher Walken thread that was posted several days ago.

That man is a comedic genius!
