'It was only through a couple of our senators that the statistics came to the fore in the first place...'

Shows how dangerous this entire PC situation is. Fortunately in Australia, the Left hasn't succeeded (yet) in shutting us up, but they are trying.

Hiding muslim crime in over-all statistics is the norm throughout europe, as you will have read, if you followed my links to Mark Steyn, Daniel Pipes and Time Magazine articles. It makes me wonder if the same is not happening in the US, where it is not legal to name the ethnicity of a perpetrator - It's called profiling, I believe.

For the aussie experience, this article speaks volumes:

For the most part, Jews who have come to the US since 1945 have been conservatives.

Strictly speaking, there is a difference between a political refugee and an economic immigrant.
We allow refugees in all the time.

1. France was a relatively non-anti-Semitic country when compared to those of Eastern Europe.
2. Countries change. In the 1920's, Jews were assimilated and prominent in Weimar Germany. A decade later, a calamity began. The problem is that anti-Semitism is becoming prevalent in France. The Arabs are anti-Semitic. The left hates Israel and doesn't want to offend t he Arabs. The right blames Israel for instability.

"French Justice Minister Dominique Perben said last week that 180 anti-Jewish acts had been recorded so far this year, including cases of assault, arson and verbal insults."

Berlin - 1936?

Islam is gaining a stronghold in France as the Nazis did in Germany - each equally motivated by the hatred of God's Chosen People.

What are your feelings on the Sharon/Bush initiative to resettle Jews out of Gaza?

From your post #37: The remaining French will live to regret their leaving.

You are absolutely right. The French are going to be losing a lot of talented people. France's loss, other countries' gain.

No tears here for the French, but then again, there never have been.

30,000 out of France's 575,000-strong Jewish community were considering immigrating to Israel

That's not a safe place, what with the daily bombings.

Pardon my frankness but I shudder whenever I see the words French and immigrant in the same story.

"...I would have thought that with the conservatives' strong support of Israel, and the strong family values, that there would be more Jewish folks supporting the GOP. I just don't get it."

That is changing.

It has been the position of Free Republic, as a grassroots Conservative activist organization, to encourage the Jewish community at large to abandon the Democrat party by exposing the treachery of the left concerning Israel, especially the Clinton/Albright/Oslo years, and their inherrant Jew hate, and that work accomplished through the Conservative/Orthodox Jewish community present at Free Republic.

They are qualified, they are effective, and they are faithful. We should continue to support them.

How did the encyclopedias and almanacs arrive at these figures? Did the census forms contain a checkbox for religious affiliation? Did they go from door to door noting the presence of a mezuzah? Or did they knock on the door and say, "Pardonnez-moi, monsieur, etes-vous Juif ou Français?"

Apparently so. Quite a number of countries enumerated the Jewish population in censuses. Back in those days it would be easy to find the slackers too, since they could be cross checked against Baptismal records. The figures are accurate enough to be accepted by the Jewish Encylopedia.

Certain people like to "quote" census figures from unavailable sources in order to make certain claims about the "actual" number of Holocaust victims.

Don't start me with your Nazi baiting you l---r.

You need to learn to keep on topic. We aren't talking holocaust victims here. We are talking Jews in France. Okay?

Various wild claims are being made about "widespread" French anti-semitism. I'm poking a few holes.

Well, it seems like you folks can't get one straight story here. Some say France was relatively tolerant, others say it was a "lesser of two evils" choice.

Frankly, I like to let the numbers speak for themselves.

Quite simply, the Jewish population of France has trebled in 60 years, while the country has seen a 15% population uptick as a whole, and most (over half) of the growth of the Jewish population is post-1960.

THEREFORE, it seems clear to me that up until the present, France has been seen as a desirable locale for Jews to relocate to. If that is so, its hard to blame the long term residents there, the French, for any sudden uptick of anti-semitism they perceive themselves to be on the receiving end of.

Far more likely that the blame should rest with the N. African Arabs, with whom the French are also having problems.

So why are you guys all yapping about the French as if it is their fault? Certainly you don't believe Algerians become French by moving to Marsielles? Or that the French are out advertising their country as a hot destination for Arab emigration?

This is like noticing Mexican anti-semitism in the US, and then blaming ordinary Americans for being part of an anti-semitic country because Mexicans live here, when ordinary Americans have been welcoming to Jews but never asked the Mexicans to invade.

Notice the word "relatively." There were some very anti-Semitic elements in France. However, compared to Russia, it was a haven.

Postwar France was quite tolerant of Jews. Hatred of the Vichy regime saw to that. That does not mean that there were no open anti-Semites or that this did not grow with Frances defection tothe anti-Israel camp in 1967.
Many Algerian and Morrocan Jews did move to France. (Although far more moved to Israel.) The current violence is almost totally the work of Arabs. However, as anti-Zionism becomes anti-Semitism and the French internalize premature Dhimmitude, the culture becomes hostile to Jews.

Certain people like to "quote" census figures from unavailable sources in order to make certain claims about the "actual" number of Holocaust victims.

One more comment about this. All the Holocaust Denial arguments about gas chambers and diesel engines and the like are all so much nonesense when it ultimately comes down to the question of numbers, because it is kind of tough to come up with an alternate explanation for the sudden disappearance of the Polish Jewish community. Where did they go?

Apparently, you are familiar with the numbers arguements some of these people use also. Also apparently, you don't understand how to answer it. If you did, you wouldn't be afraid of the numbers.

The numbers in an honest reckoning are the strongest physical evidence for the Holocaust. Stronger even then claims that "My Aunt So-and-so perished at Auschwitz". War is confusing when familes are dispossessed, uprooted and scattered across a continent. Maybe Aunt So-and-so wasn't really killed like you thought but ended up living in Russia or Australia or some place you'd never think she'd end up. On the other hand, a few million Polish Jews (and others) just suddenly gone missing is far more persuasive if the denier can't point to where these millions went to. If you wish to uphold the memory of their deaths, you should learn the numbers and understand the manipulations made with them.

Don't fear the numbers. Learn them and make an answer.

Yaelle.....I am not impressed with the level of patriotism or rationality let alone common sense that American Jews have.....I don't know how much help they deserve...

tell me , why would a predominantly Christian nation bend over backwards, and make enemies of a good portion of the world by supporting Israel and then have American Jews act like hatchet men for the Demonrat party....

American Jews have a death wish by supporting appeasement with fanatics, by supporting Demonrats and by taking every opportunity to slam American Christians by eliminating any and all symbols of Christianity in this country.....

they talk about the Holocaust almost with reverance, yet they can't see the coming Holocaust...

maybe they just refuse to look into the future.....

Interesting figures Cherusker. I would add that one reason for a rise in the Jewish population of France was the influx of Jews who wished to leave Eastern Block countries in the 1950s and 1960s. Generally speaking, these immigrants did well in France.

I am extremely skeptical of this "mass exodus" of French Jews to Israel. I shall believe it when I see it.

The French Jewish community are not marginal, they are well off, educated, privileged. If you went to lovely areas like the Maurais area in Paris, you would see the excellent level they have achieved.

One thing which I have noticed, in the Maurais, from the early 1990s to recently, is the sharp rise in Israelis. Yes. Israelis in France. Can we have a figure for that? There are plenty of them, they have actually revitalised many declining Jewish areas (French Jews have a low birthrate) and in some streets of the Maurais they are quite dominant - they have brought a different, Mediterranean culture to the area.

I have also noticed that Israeli graduate students like to go to France, to study in Paris.
