WIN ONE FOR THE GIPPER? BUSH WANTS TO WIN ELECTION OVER REAGAN'S DEAD BODY
Philadelphia Daily News ^ | 6/11/2004 | unsigned editorial

Posted on 06/11/2004 8:44:32 AM PDT by dirtboy

LOG ONTO www.georgewbush.com, the president's campaign Web site, and find - on the front page - a big picture of Ronald Reagan, and links to his speeches on the front page.

It's rather pathetic, the attempt to use the death of the former president to change the subject from Iraq, torture, and investigations into faulty intelligence. It's also opportunistic, given that reminding people of the important issues still confronting the nation looks like dishonoring the dead.

John Kerry understands that: He canceled five days of campaign appearances during the mourning period. Republicans, on the other hand, have used the time to pump up their candidate.

We honor Ronald Reagan today because he was president of our country. We have no problem whatsoever with the pageantry of the state funeral and the closing of most federal offices in a National Day of Mourning today. All presidents are entitled to this honor.

We do have a problem with the obvious attempt to conflate this with honoring the conservative ideology that Reagan championed.

More landmarks probably should be named for Reagan. But something called the Reagan Legacy Project has set as its goal memorials in all 50 states and 3,607 counties. Its biggest push is for Reagan to supplant Alexander Hamilton on the ten-dollar bill. The sponsor of this project is Americans for Tax Reform, Grover Norquist's uber-conservative interest group. So the memorials stand not only Reagan, but for Norquist's politics.

Thankfully, Pennsylvania is not one of the 15 states that also have shut their offices today, following our own historical precedent, but also saving tens of millions of dollars. Gov. Rendell has called for a moment of silence and reflection at 11:30 a.m. This is an appropriate gesture.

The outpouring of tribute from thousands of ordinary Americans who lined up to see Reagan's flag-draped coffin is real. It comes from people who supported Reagan's philosophy and those who liked him regardless, and simply those who want to be a part of American history.

We honor that as well. Reagan's funeral would be a fitting time to bring Americans together to share the grandeur of our nation's rituals. But the undercurrent of political one-upmanship is making that hard to do.

There were a LOT of deaths that helped keep Clinton in power, and a lot of them were VERY suspicious.

It sure was handy for me personally having all those nice links to Reagan's speeches right there at W's web site. Kudos to W!

I'm guessing that the Dems, seeing what has happened, will now want to knock off Clinton so that they can have their own state funeral.

HA!HA!...a suggestion, perhaps?..both of them? :))

I will now formally put the "Wellstone Seal of Approval" on every lib piece of propaganda that attempts to turn Reagan's funeral into the Wellstone debacle.

They're trying to make the positive into a Republican negative. Like they do with "negative advertising" and "campaign money" that the Republicans use but the Democrats NEVER do..... right!!!!

This is the new tact .... that they're going to use... Breslin did it.. some paper in Connecticut made similar comments about the Thatcher eulogy .... prepare for the torrent of papers and networks giving us their heartfelt sadness about Reagan's funeral being turned into a "spectacle", "political rally", "stepping stool for Bush", etc....

What a shock it will be for them when their Hosannas won't draw too many crowds. :(

Now that our great 40th President is almost finished with his long journey on Earth, the media that has been relatively restrained for the past few days, will be unleashing a new onslaught of attacks on the Reagan legacy as well as our current President and his policies.

Get ready for the hatred folks. They are going to come at us full-throttle as Kerry begins to lose grasp of his points in the polls.

Here is what really bothers the Left. The truth hurts. Bush does not have to say a word about Ronald Reagan. Over the last few days, the times and challenges that this nation faced when Reagan was in office have been brought forth. The parallels to today are so obvious that a child could see them. Bush is taking the same stand Mr. Reagan took to face the challenges to the civilized world.

That is what is truly bothering the Left, they only do well when people forget the truth. I look forward to the next week when the Left tries to undo the events of this week. Their best efforts will utterly fail and will only serve to show this country what small minded people they are. Like it or not, the American People loved Reagan. The left could not talk them out of it for eight years of his Presidentcy and the years that followed. They will not talk them out of it next week.

Ha! In truth, GWB has kept an extremely low profile since Reagan passed away. Tending to the business of D-Day and the G-8 summit. It wasn't until last evening that he and Laura got to really pay their respects to someone who is a role model to them.

One nice thing about these low life liberals...they make the choice to throw a vote against
them very easy...

To the Daily News, anyone to the right of Bill Clinton is a conservative. They see themselves and Slick as sensible moderates.

Simi Valley!....Dozens of angles? I don't think so. Look at the tape. Find the newspaper photographs. The angles were limited.

I observed as the video of Mr. John Kerry was being taken by a photographer who was only there for that specific purpose. The only time a camera was seen was when Mr. John Kerry's photographer placed himself in front of one of the stationary cameras. The photographer left immediately after Mr. John Kerry departed.

I am not talking about the Rotunda.
