We're over 300 miles from Fort Lewis and about 200 miles from Yakima. The closest military base is Fairchild Air Force base in Spokane (KC 135's).

They looked like BlackHawks but it was hard to tell, by the time I got to a window where I could see them they were quite a ways off... sure heard them though.

The sound can be a signature too. A two bladed chopper like the UH-1H (Huey from 'Nam) had a distinctive sound like a WOPPA WOPPA but the four bladed BlackHawks sound like an angry Hornet and the prop wash when it's low can durn near blow you off your feet.
