THE REAGAN LEGACY Mourning decorum's death

To say that California casual was the dress code among those paying last respects to Ronald Reagan is to put it charitably.

By Booth Moore, Times Staff Writer

A president was lying in repose, but the occasion could just as well have been a Saturday afternoon at Universal CityWalk, judging from the polo shirts, shorts, Harley-Davidson T-shirts, tank tops, flip-flops and dirty white sneakers with pulled-up tube socks.

For some people these days, there is nothing they will dress up for ? not a concert at Disney Hall, a graduation, not even to pay their respects to a former head of state.

When Americans went to see John F. Kennedy's flag-draped coffin at the U.S. Capitol in 1963, women wore dresses and high heels and men donned suits.

But during Monday's procession through the Reagan library in Simi Valley, many men did not even remove their baseball caps as they paid tribute to a man who was never in the Oval Office without a coat and tie.

The lastline in the above post should read: Since you so dislike judgmentalism, perhaps you should begin by erradicating it in yourself.

You know, in watching the procession of people thru the library, it never crossed my mind that they weren't dressed to some acceptable standard. I didn't judge them. I have just willingly pointed out to you, and the other fools on this thread that feel the same way, that you are petty. With all that is going on, you are in an uproar over people not dressed properly. That isn't judgementalism, that is the truth.

This article wasn't about casual dress of the mourners. It was a SLAP at the people. Basically implying that President Reagan's supporters are just a bunch of low-class, trailer-trash, rubes who are un-mannered and don't know how to dress period, much less for a wake or funeral.

*** DING DING DING *** No more calls; we have a winner!

I suspect that many of the criticisms on this thread result from a vague perception that the article is an oblique sneer at Reagan and his admirers.

Grace is the ability to behave correctly in every circustanse and the ability not to embarrass those who make a mistake.

Reagan would never have worn shorts and a t-shirt to a funereal visitation. He also wouldn't have chastened or embarrassed those who did. He had grace; he was a gentleman; his love for people went beyond how they looked or behaved.

I can learn a lot from his example still, as can many others on this thread.

Believe it or not, the length of a post does not indicate excess emotion. But y'know, it amazing how emotional and judgmental you are being. I guess you would approve of me if I just condoned a decline in public decorum, but I cannot be your clone.

Excellent rebuttal! Clearly the result of every ounce of reason and intellect at your disposal. I'm humbled by the sound logic.

No one on this thread ascribed evil thoughts about those in the line. You don't judge people in line that engage in a practice that you agree with. But you characterize others who disagree with you as "fools."

Then you make a statement that what you say is true and not judgmental. That is the height of judgmentalism, friend, because you have judged that only what you say is true and everyone who disagrees with you is judgmental.

"Good grief. You mean they were disappointed that it was a closed casket?"

Oh, please. Get off your high horse. The point is, some stood in line for hours and hours. It is unfair to expect them to be all gussied up like they would be for a regular funeral.

If you want to dress up and stand in line for several hours, knock yourself out. But please stop being so elitist.

Truthfully, you are foolish to be so bothered by what people are wearing.

My mother always said that people behaved differently, depending upon how they were dressed.Long ago, when I was a child,I had school clothes, play clothes,dress-up clothes, etc.! I wasn't allowed to wear "play clothes" to dinner;even when it was hot and we didn't have air-conditioning,back then.

People used to get dressed up to go shopping on Fifth Avenue and my grandmother wouldn't go downstairs,to get the second mail (there were TWO mail deliveries a day, back then, and the doorman would bring up the first delivery and newspapers, but not the second delivery.)without her makeup and being dressed nicely,no matter what the weather. And sadly, those days are over.

The whole hippy thing, denigrating the clothes, manners, speech, and lifestyles of their elders, was the beginning of the end! Manners and rules ARE a god thing. It saved people from having to worry about the petty things in life...following the rules made life easier and nicer!

Lowering standards makes life,EVERYONE'S LIFE, mean, nasty, confusing, and yes, even sordid. And being railed at,by supposed Conservatives, because I agreed with you,is but a small example of just how low this nation has fallen. But then,I guess I and you struck a nerve.

I remember a time when not behaving and not dressing correcting earned condemnation, children NEVER heard the word "shit",let alone worse words, and behaved well or else,no matter where they were, parents did NOT take small children to evening showings of movies, and people actually looked "nice",even when they weren't well off.

What one wears IS a show of respect to others,as well as of themselves!

You and I may just be the last of the Dodos, but we're right and the others ARE dead wrong.

I didn't judge them either. I just happened to notice the truth about their clothing - it was very casual.

No one was in an uproar except you, because we mentioned it.

Nope, sorry. I finally commented because I saw a hateful thread, judging people on not being good enough.

Fools, one and all, of you. Grow up.

I've read both, many times and Jesus the Christ didn't say that all of the laws in the OT were now made null and void.If HE had, then adultery and homosexuality would be okay.

I haven't said that it wouldn't be more respectful. I would dress in a way that I would find appropriate. But I would not spend time in line looking down my nose at others, or telling my friends, online acquaintances, how awful and disrespectful others were because they didn't meet my level of dress. That is foolishness.
