WASHINGTON (AP) — Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry, flying to California on Tuesday to attend graduation ceremonies for his daughter, was considering paying his respects to Ronald Reagan as the former president's body lay in repose at his presidential library.

Kerry suspended public campaign events this week in honor of Reagan, who died Saturday.

Kerry and his aides were considering a visit Tuesday afternoon, the campaign said. The period in which Reagan will lie in repose at the library in Simi Valley, a community northwest of Los Angeles, was scheduled to end Tuesday evening.

Reagan's death has shifted attention from the campaign to national mourning and commemorations of his historical and political legacy.

Kerry planned to attend the state funeral for Reagan on Friday at Washington's National Cathedral.

Kerry's daughter, Alexandra, is graduating from the American Film Institute in Los Angeles. He planned to attend the ceremony and a screening of her short film, "The Last Full Measure," which tells the story of a 9-year-old girl and her father's difficult return home from the Vietnam War.

Kerry is a decorated Navy veteran of the Vietnam War. His daughter has said the film is not autobiographical.

After all, any man who would bring his daughter with him to purchase a jock strap is one sick jerk.

and his daughter could have saved herself a lot of embarrassment if she'd taken him with her to buy a bra.

I'm fine with this as long as he has to wait in line like the rest of the people.

Then he will be portrayed as "one of the people...a regular guy".

He will pay his respect before he doesn't pay his respect. As for suspending his campaign, in the first place he needed another vacation, and in the second place the more public appearances he makes, the less people like him.

"Kerry is a decorated Navy veteran of the Vietnam War." The press never fails to mention this. Contrast this with when Dole ran. The press kept depicting him as a disgruntled vet.
Or, when Bush Sr. ran, when the press often forgot to mention that he was the Navy's youngest pilot, who was shot down three times and continued to serve with distinction.

Photo op and his 'group' will get to go to the head of the line.

I'm sure those who have been waiting upwards of 5 hours (in line, etc.) will really be appreciative of the Kerry crew adding another hour or so to the wait. It is doubtful that Kerry will stand in line.

Why can't he do it in Washington DC? I would imagine that there would be a special time for all Congressmen to pay their respects before opening the viewing for the public.

I can't believe you are insinuating that Kerry should wait in line along side the unwashed mass of commoners.

As for suspending his campaign...

He hasn't. This will get his face in the news and the media will make a big deal of it.

The article failed to mention GWB's responsibility for the Abu Ghraib Iraqi prison tortures. [That will probably be added to the final press release version.]

"I have no problem with Kerry going to view Reagan at the library. As long as his sorry ass gets in line and waits many hours like the rest of those mourning Reagan."

You beat me to it! I heard the line can take up to 7 hours, from beginning to end.
