Hollywood sources tell LA Weekly columnist Nikki Finke that former President Ronald Reagan's medical condition has suddenly worsened. "He really took a downslide today," the insider told Finke Friday evening. "Doctors are at the house. Things aren't good." At the start of the day, several news organizations chased down a rumor that the ex-president had died, but it wasn't true... Family members gathered at the Reagan's Bel Air home late Friday... Developing...

There are thousands upon thousands of others whom will tell similar tales about the man. It was who he was. No matter their station in life, Reagan treated people with respect, personal warmth and generous kindness.

A while back PBS tried and failed to do a complementary documentary about the carter years. Failed because even their whitewash was too thin to cover Just how fantastic a breath of fresh air Reagan gave america. Carter's malase speech was founded on how much we were a miserable nation and bad people. Reagan can in and reminded us we were not only a good nation and good people but we were all a force of good in a world fighting against evil and evil's minions.

But not so among the European, Canadian, or NZ media or general public. I have read enough of the establishment media and opinions to know that they still hold contempt for this "foolish reckless imperalist cowboy". I have read articles saying that it was all Richard Nixon's work, as his detente strategy which laid the groundwork for the Soviet Union's dissolution in 1991, and I have also read other accounts which say that it was Gorbachev's voluntary decision for reforms which brought down Societ communism. But I have also known enough about the reality through reading the 1980s centre-right Chinese-language media (which were anti-Communist and anti-PRC) to know that much of the western establishment media were wrong.

I'm in tears again, reading that post (sorry, it's an emotional afternoon).
And in reference to another post, if you don't feel welcome in NZ anymore, I for one would be glad to stand as one to sign a stat-dec declaring you good Australian immigrant material. The more we have like you, the more chance a conservative government has of retaining power, and thus retaining the US-Australian alliance. I salute you for your eloquence and your morals!

Speaking of reporters. I recall pretty lighthearted moment during the video presentation at the Correspondent's Dinner where they noted that Ronald Reagan liked the color red, he points to a reporterette wearing red, she asks a question, he answers it, points to Helen Thomas who's raised her hand, and he said "Next time wear red" and the reporters all laughed and Ronald Reagan had that trademark smile on his face.

When the time unfortunately comes, I hope Mrs. Reagan will have it in her to allow him to lie in State in DC.

I seriously think this will be the biggest funeral/mourning/celebration of life since President Kennedy.

I agree. I hate to consider the political aspects of his passing, but no doubt that the outpouring of memories, of praise, and of love for Pres. Reagan will overwhelm the efforts of the news media to suppress and spin his legacy.

The news media was incredibly respectful of Richard Nixon when he died. I was stunned.

If they can play nice for Nixon, they can for Reagan. I hope.
