The same group whose tactics involve "simple" devices like car bombs, truck bombs, backpack bombs and general use of explosives - or who must hijack the weapons they use against us (planes on 9-11) - does not have pre-positioned nukes inside the US.

we talked about those NEST teams in detail last Xmas - they were searching for dirty bombs with "street level" detectors, as their was a report that the AQ dirty bomber engineer had entered the US from Mexico and might do something during the holiday period.

Can you explain that a little more to me? Thanks

I hope they do appeal. As I've said before, if this PC nonsense is allowed to continue it will only assist in our downward spiral. Common sense is no longer allowed in our publik edukatun sistem and it's a crying shame.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
You know I agree with that. Why would they want to tear the country up? Or make any of the land unusable? Doesn't make sense.
Now blowing up a building or the like, yep.
Sometimes I feel real optimist and think it is all a game of hype but don't know why.
well, the point is - it would represent such a major disconnect between their capabilities. all these nukes, all over the US, and they are hijacking planes so they can turn them into cruise missiles?
this is not to say they cannot hit us - they are certainly capable of other things, even WMDs with bio, chem, and dirty bombs are technically feasible for them.
and let me add to that - I just came back from the Belmont Stakes. A large police presence of course, there always is (especially since 9-11). But I did notice that this year, the officers had waist mounted pouches with gas masks in them (the shape gave it away). So that tells you something.
UNITY: The vital key to fighting global terror
Terrorism has replaced the Cold War as the global security threat of the 21st century. But while South-east Asia is keenly aware of the threat and takes active measures to counter it, North-east Asia remains less aware. Meanwhile, a gathering storm looms over Taiwan, which might lead to war between the United States and China - a war which China may lose, in the first round. This is an extract from Prime Minister Goh Chok Tong's speech at the Shangri-La Dialogue last night
THE fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989 symbolised the end of the Cold War. But I believe the real post-Cold War era did not begin until Sept 11, 2001.
Of course, few people really thought history ended with the collapse of the Soviet Union. History proved far more resilient. Crises did not abate. But there was no widespread sense of a serious global security threat such as that which had infused the Cold War period and galvanised the free world to hold together. Even the 1991 Iraq invasion of Kuwait was dealt with in a relatively straightforward way by a broad American-led coalition, giving rise to the hope that a peaceful New World Order could be achieved.
That hope proved illusory as did the expectation that 'democratic enlargement' was an irresistible trend that would stabilise international relations. Still, as the threat of superpower nuclear conflict receded, there was a sense that the world had reached a geopolitical equilibrium. None of the conflicts in Africa, the Balkans or the Middle East was thought to really threaten the global equilibrium.
Sept 11 swept away these comfortable assumptions. It shook America's sense of security and changed America's definition of its role in the world. Suddenly, America felt vulnerable. To protect itself, America was determined to take the battle to its enemies wherever they might be. Because of its global supremacy, America could and would go it alone, if necessary. Post-Cold War geopolitics is the geopolitics of the war against terrorism.
I believe the fight against terrorism will last as many decades as the Cold War. However, I do not think that everyone sees or understands the challenge in such stark terms. And this is one of the principal dangers of post-Cold War geopolitics.
Because the hate us, fear us, and want us dead, and they want to drive stakes into our hearts to make sure we STAY dead?
Nope I didn't say they were playing out a storybook. I was simply explaining what the book Tales of the Arabian Nights was, and the difference between that and the Protocols of the Elders of Zion.
Navy ships, subs now under one command
"Naval Base Kitsap became a reality Friday as the Bremerton and Bangor installations were merged into one command at a ceremony."
"It’s part of the Navy’s overall effort to save money in every area in order to build more ships and aircraft over the next four years."
Thanks for the links; I'm "recruiting" a guy I work with to FR and the TM, and I couldn't recall where each of our carrier strike groups were headed, but I was telling him of the deployments. Being an ex-Navy man, he was more than a little interested in the info.
Rumsfeld: Al Qaeda to strike again
Protests ahead of Bangladesh visit
SINGAPORE -- U.S. Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld has warned Asian nations that al Qaeda will strike the region again.
In a speech to an Asia-Pacific security conference in Singapore on Saturday, Rumsfeld pressed Asia to become more involved in the global war on terror.
Rumsfeld pledged closer military support and security ties with Washington, but denied the Bush administration was pressuring Asian nations to support the coalition in Iraq.
"Let there be no doubt, there is more to come," he cautioned despite some success in capturing al Qaeda figures in Asia and foiling some plots.
Of the U.S.-led war on terrorism, Rumsfeld said: "Despite considerable progress, the reality is that today we remain closer to the beginning of this struggle than to its end."
Rumsfled told defense ministers, military officials, lawmakers and private security experts at the conference there was still a lot that remained unknown about the war on terrer. He also hinted at some frustration in measuring the success of the fight against terrorism.
"What we don't know is what's coming in the intake, how many more of those folks are being trained, developed, organized and deployed and sent out to work the scenes, the shadows and the caves," he said.
Rumsfeld said the battle was also against ideological extremism and advised that any nation hoping to make a separate peace with terrorists would be mistaken, just as were some European nations who had aimed to appease Adolf Hitler in the 1930s.
I agree. The muslim terrorists aren't fighting for our land. This is not a war for territory. This is a war with roots (in their minds) in belief systems and ideology; a lot of which was brought about in the madrassas and training camps. We aren't dealing with a rational enemy. Comparing this to previous wars this is a new type of war and a new type of enemy. They are not after our land, they are after our destruction as a people and our ideals as a society.
