If it was destroyed based strictly on "the nature in which it was dropped" this kinda hacks me off. Was it x-rayed first? (sorry, the link didn't come up for me.) If this was possibly a "dead drop", I sure would like to have known what the papers were before they were destroyed.

What are some possible dates you are watching regarding this?
The "horizontal meteor" or skipper is what I would guess. I think these things can even enter and exit the atmosphere if the angle is right.
I remember reading about a large one of these "skippers" that happened in the late 70's on the west coast. It was seen in the daytime. I'm sure I saw the story on a meteor watcher's website, but I can't find it at the moment.

What people saw wasn't a hoax, the known location of impact was.
There was something (proabbly a meteor) and it's strange that the only headline you see for days is the hoax part of a true story.
A coverup that isn't really a coverup. The true story is there but the media concentrates on the hoax. Why?

There was a discussion about it a few weeks ago.
Could you be thinking of the "Grand Teton" or "Jackson Hole" meteor which was pictured on the cover of a magazine? In fact, I kept that cover for quite a few years (Scientific American?), then misplaced it.

My neighbor has a family of pet pigeons roosting on her roof. I bet they saw it. I didn't, but I watched the real-time reactions on Northwest Cable News Network. Many callers were quite shook up.
That may be it, I'm pretty sure it was in Wyoming, so the location would be right.
As I recall, it was a very very close call for the earth. A very large meteor entered the atmosphere, travelled in the atmosphere over the west, then exited the atmosphere.
For some reason the altitude of 70 kilometers sticks in my mind as how close ot came to the earth's surface.
Hmmmm. Interesting.
