Some people are way too sensitive. One time in England a little old lady struck up a conversation with me in a restaurant. When she realized I was a yank she said "Oh you're from the colonies." I thought it was weird but laughed and shrugged it off. Clearly it's a bit offensive for people from "the land of the free" to be labeled colonials but it seems to be a phrase the older Brits still use. I don't think this was racial. Cut our Brit allies some slack...even the goofy royals.

This is usually said as an ironic comment over here. I have American friends who I call 'bloody colonials' sometimes, always in jest when we're arguing over some trivial point or other and they always reply with some witticism regarding my Englishness!

The differenece is that that little old lady was evidently jossing with you -- light hearted, you're from the colonies. the angry old lady Princess Michael was NOT jossing.
