Clancy's batting for the House of Saud, which, for the moment, puts him on the Dem's side. After 9-11, it's hard to read his old stuff -- too much kissing up to the Saudis as our friends and Islam as a religion of peace that's being distorted by a few extremists. He especially loves his Prince Bandar character. In his last book, you can see him backpedaling to some extent (the successful Israeli-Palestinian peace effort of an earlier book has now failed), but he's still kissing up to Bandar.
To be honest, his Ryan character is a real wuss in terms of policy. Our enemies keep on hitting us with WMD's in the novels and Ryan retaliates with trials and a few targeted bombs (or does nothing with regards to the Chicoms) or assassinations. It's no wonder he's unhappy with Bush. Bush actually fights back.
