Speaking to the Nation
Town Hall ^ | May 24, 2004 | Michael Barone [Creators Syndicate]

Posted on 05/23/2004 9:49:38 PM PDT by quidnunc

George W. Bush will speak to the nation tonight about what is happening in Iraq, and what will happen next in Iraq. It is about time. Wartime presidents must speak periodically to the people and explain, again and again, where we are in the course of the war. They must explain what setbacks we have encountered and how we are working to overcome them. They must keep in view the ultimate goal of victory, and explain why achieving it is worthwhile — what dangers we will escape and what kind of better world we will make.

Franklin Roosevelt did that during World War II with his fireside chats. The news was not always welcome: In one early speech, he explained why we would be driven out of the Philippines. And his address to the nation on D-Day was in a form that would arouse shrieking criticism if it came from Bush today: It was a prayer. But for the most part, Roosevelt did not have to deal with one problem Bush faces today. And that is that today's press works to put the worst possible face on the war.

Hence the endless dwelling on the abuses in the Abu Ghraib prison and the breathless speculation that it would drive Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld from office. Instead, an ABC/Washington Post poll showed the public 69 percent to 20 percent against Rumsfeld's resignation. Hence the much lesser coverage given to the murder of Nick Berg. Hence the microscopic coverage of the finding of the deadly poison sarin in an improvised explosive device — mustn't give credence to the possibility that Saddam was conducting (as inspector David Kay said) weapons of mass destruction programs.

I can understand PresBush`s reluctance to have press conferences. Such Q&A sessions aren't very productive and only give the partisan media more ammunition to use against the current administration. But Michael Barrone is right. The President needs to speak to the American people in as many high profile speeches as possible. This will help to keep the spirit and the resolve of the nation on high and the will of the American people focused where it belongs, on the WoT.

President Bush was out riding his mountain bike and took a spill. Calmly let the media take pictures. And he didn't curse his Secret Service agents for running into him...

Bush fell off his bike this weekend while on a 17 mile ride on his ranch.

Although John Al Queda Kerry made some snide comment about Bush's training wheels coming off that the liberal media chose not to run with according to Drudge.

Thanks, I missed that news!

Still, not a good photo!

That looks like about 5 or 6 Kerry purple hearts!

Ping to #4, showing how badly the President got scrapped up on his bike fall.

The man has NADS!!! Letting the media photo him without makeup to cover his "owies." Contrast to Botox Kerry.

Was it Kerry's security guards that tripped up the President? Did Bush shout profanies? No

Look for the Democrats and the media organs to set the bar for the Bush speech unreasonably high tomorrow. They smell blood in the water.

A few "abrasions" and scrapes

GW rode that ol' hoss home!

Kerry had to be driven to a doctor in Boston!

Secret Service had to put his $7000 Unobtainium
frame girly bike into a SUV and probably to a custom
bike shop for mechanical checkout, repairs,
and "cosmetic work"!

GW probably just wiped off his
mountain bike on his shirt tails.

There are psuedo-male wimps...

There are liberal girly-men...

...and there are tough Texas cowboys like GW!

Ping - short rant re. the press - and a pic of our brave, banged-up President.

Of course the violence will increase as we near handover, and then the election - it is the nature of this enemy - and criticizing the President or the war effort for this truth during a war between good and evil is not helpful, especially from allies - who continue to allow our enemies to divide us (and where is the daily praise, as well, from our war-critic "allies" - for our courageous troops who continue to defeat this enemy at every confrontation, daily?). < /rant>

Praying for our troops, and our CinC.

Thanks. It looked to me like his chin took the worst of the spill. At least it is the biggest scrap. I hadn't noticed until that pic, but his hand was injured too.

Poor guy ! Now he has to go on national TV tonight with that. FOX News said yesterday that probably TV makeup could fix it where it might not look too bad. And I bet they don't have too many closeups ??

Anyway, I'm glad he wasn't hurt any worse than he was.

Thanks for the ping.
