Thank you, sultan. I just got back from Chamberlain, SoDak and the whole town was decorated with yellow ribbons and flags for their returning Guard unit.

Even on the worst streets of Ft. Thompson on the Crow Creek Reservation, which has the highest suicide rate anywhere in the U.S., there were flags and patriotic symbols in some of the windows. For some of the young people there, the military is the only way out.

It's good to be home but I almost hestitated to clean the last of the cow manure off my shoes. It brought back a lot of memories.

I sat in the Sioux Falls airport the day after the SoDak election to replace the nutcase Rep. Bill Janklow and eavesdropped on the Dimwit operatives flying back to DC. One was trying to call Lannie Davis and they were all talking about how falling-down-drunk people got waiting on the election results.

The Dim candidate only won by 2% so it was an intense night for everyone. One poor Dim volunteer was arrested the next morning when the drunken female Dim he had sex with woke up and didn't remember anything from the night before. He was charged with sexual contact with a person incapable of giving consent. Feminazis sure know how to ruin a good party.

Hope you are feeling better. I missed Free Republic but it was kind of nice not to listen to the news for a few days.

Just interested in the facts. My Father-in-law is a minister and I am really up on my Bible.

I also studied Islam as an elective in college (in liberal southern California) back in the 70's, and Homosexuality is a sin in that religion too, as well as Judaism (My father was Jewish), and several others.

It is really unfair that the liberals who tout fairness choose to single out Christianity as the most intolerant religion when, if they would just check their facts they would find that it is indeed one of the most inclusive. Christians don't turn anyone away, not if they really are Christians and not just playing church.

The denigration of Christianity is based on a rejection of the primary message of Christ, not on objective reasoning.

sultan88: Yes, I am a devout Christian. Are you Christian too?

p8riot: I don't know if you were referring to me, but I never said that Christianity was intolerant. A lot of other liberals have that impression, mainly because the Religious Right has such a strong-arm approach to American politics. But I think most would agree that protestant Christianity, as a belief, is much more tolerant than, say, Islam. You just have to separate the belief system itself from its social activism.

However, even in protestant Christianity, there are social taboos, such as being openly homosexual. The door is always open in my church too, but anyone coming in with their gay lover would certainly be greeted with less than open arms. When it comes to homosexuality, there is definitely a tendency to hate the sinner just as much as the sin, if not more so.

Subject: The Military

The average age of the military man is 19 years. He is a short haired, tight-muscled kid who, under normal circumstances is considered by society as half man, half boy. Not yet dry behind the ears, not old enough to buy a beer, but old enough to die for his country. He never really cared much for work and he would rather wax his own car than wash his father's; but he has never collected unemployment either.

He's a recent High School graduate; he was probably an average student, pursued some form of sport activities, drives a ten year old jalopy, and has a steady girlfriend that either broke up with him when he left, or swears to be waiting when he returns from half a world away. He listens to rock and roll or hip-hop or rap or jazz or swing and 155mm howizzitor. He is 10 or 15 pounds lighter now than when he was at home because he is working or fighting from before dawn to well after dusk.

He has trouble spelling, thus letter writing is a pain for him, but he can field strip a rifle in 30 seconds and reassemble it in less time in the dark. He can recite to you the nomenclature of a machine gun or grenade launcher and use either one effectively if he must. He digs foxholes and latrines and can apply first aid like a professional. He can march until he is told to stop or stop until he is told to march.

He obeys orders instantly and without hesitation, but he is not without spirit or individual dignity. He is self-sufficient. He has two sets of fatigues: he washes one and wears the other. He keeps his canteens full and his feet dry. He sometimes forgets to brush his teeth, but never to clean his rifle. He can cook his own meals, mend his own clothes, and fix his own hurts. If you're thirsty, he'll share his water with you; if you are hungry, his food. He'll even split his ammunition with you in the midst of battle when you run low.

He has learned to use his hands like weapons and weapons like they were his hands. He can save your life - or take it, because that is his job. He will often do twice the work of a civilian, draw half the pay and still find ironic humor in it all. He has seen more suffering and death then he should have in his short lifetime.

He has stood atop mountains of dead bodies, and helped to create them. He has wept in public and in private, for friends who have fallen in combat and is unashamed. He feels every note of the National Anthem vibrate through his body while at rigid attention, while tempering the burning desire to 'square-away' those around him who haven't bothered to stand, remove their hat, or even stop talking. In an odd twist, day in and day out, far from home, he defends their right to be disrespectful.

Just as did his Father, Grandfather, and Great-grandfather, he is paying the price for our freedom. Beardless or not, he is not a boy. He is the American Fighting Man that has kept this country free for over 200 years.

He has asked nothing in return, except our friendship and understanding. Remember him, always, for he has earned our respect and admiration with his blood. And now we even have woman over there in danger, doing their part in this tradition of going to War when our nation calls us to do so. As you go to bed tonight, remember this shot.. A short lull, a little shade and a picture of loved ones in their helmets.......

While I missed out on that class while in school, I have tried to read what I can about it since.

One of the things that struck me is that the Islamic faith reveres Jesus Christ as a gifted prophet (while rejecting his claim that he is the son of God). Therefore, it would seem that strict adherence to Islamic faith would preclude "...the denigration of Christianity is based on a rejection of the primary message of Christ." You wouldn't gather this by witnessing the actions of the Islamic zealots, but it would appear to be a promising tool in reaching out to more moderate Muslims.
