I think they use "left of center" in the same way as Suzanne Vega used it, i.e. to mean "slightly askew".

Then why didn't they say something like "slightly off-center"? Why pick the term "left of center"?

I agree with you. I think they just chose poor words and really meant "corny" or a play on words.

The examples were nothing even hinting of political views.
