Fact is, in French the word "execution" is not restricted to legal execution after a death penalty. It's also used to describe the deliberate killing of an hostage. Many plaques commemorating imprisoned resistants or captured Allied troops use this word, and believe me it's in no way meant to tone down the fact these soldiers or freedom fighters were brutally murdered by their captors.
