New York-AP -- President Bush has declared this "Hurricane Preparedness Week," and is urging Americans to take steps to protect themselves from natural disasters. Homeland Security Undersecretary Michael Brown says one key precaution is a "ready kit" that includes the necessities for living without power for an extended period.
Among Brown's suggestions are a flashlight, batteries, battery-powered radio, canned foods, manual can opener, foods that can be prepared without a microwave, bottled water, medications, and a phone with a cord -- "because if you're without power, that cordless phone won't do you any good."
