Phony deputy loses his star status (Broward, FL)

A 17-year-old was charged with impersonating police after detectives said he patrolled the highway in police clothing, pulling drivers over and delivering lectures.

Investigators determined that the gear was actually obtained legally from Broward police supply stores and from an auto parts store.

The detectives who busted Babenko said anyone is allowed to buy the supplies -- provided they don't use them to impersonate an officer.

Others have resorted to stealing the equipment.
