13 are killed after pesticide truck explodes on Romanian highway

early Monday in southeastern Romania, killing 13 people, many of them firefighters, in a powerful blast, a government minister said.
The explosion occurred at about 6 a.m. local time after firefighters arrived to extinguish a fire that started near the truck which had toppled over on a main highway in the town of Mihailesti, some 70 kilometres northeast of the capital.
Col. Marian Bercan of the local firefighters said firefighters were preparing to extinguish the blaze when the explosion occurred. Firefighters were not aware of what the truck was carrying, he said.
``The accident was caused by the explosion of a substance on a truck,'' Vasile Ion, the local government chief, said earlier. ``There is nothing left of the truck ... we do not have a definitive evaluation, but it is a terrible tragedy, and there is a 15-metre wide crater.''
Gabriel Oprea, a minister for public administration, told private television station Realitate that 13 people had been killed according to preliminary counts. Nine people were reported injured.
The blast could be heard in Buzau, a city 35 kilometres away, reporters in the area said. Local residents said that the sky turned red after the blast, and plumes of smoke could be seen 15 kilometres away.(snip)
