Federal gasoline tax is a fixed amount PER GALLON. Higher prices PER GALLON means people will buy fewer gallons of gas. That means LESS tax revenue going to the bottom line. Only a sales tax that is a percentage of the total price would exact a greater tax collection, but that would be offset by reduced consumption caused by higher prices.

But the financial gurus are saying that we're not buying less. They're saying the demand has increased. Demand will also increase over summer vacation.
