Virus sweeps through Baypoint Village
County health inspectors could not pinpoint the cause of the flu-like illness that has struck residents and workers.

HUDSON - A flu-like virus has sickened about 60 residents and employees at Baypoint Village assisted living facility on State Road 52, sending eight to the hospital.

County health inspectors visited the site Friday, though no conclusive cause was determined. Stool samples will be collected over the weekend and sent to a Tampa lab for analysis. Results are expected next week.

"Our biggest concern is whether there was any food borne aspect to this," said Dr. Marc Yacht, head of the Pasco County Health Department. "At this point, I don't know whether that's true."

120 Students Sick With Virus

DES MOINES, Iowa -- The state epidemiologist said the Norwalk virus caused more than 100 Des Moines-area students to become ill last week.


About 120 students at two elementary schools -- Park Avenue in Des Moines and Crestview in Clive -- were hit with a rash of nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pains, headaches and low-grade fevers.

Suicide Car Bomb Injures Iraqi Official, Coalition Continues Operations

WASHINGTON, May 22, 2004 – A suicide car bomb exploded outside a senior Iraqi's home in Baghdad today, killing three bodyguards and one woman and heavily damaging 22 vehicles, reported Army Brig. Gen. Mark Kimmitt at a Baghdad news briefing today.

News reports said Abdul-Jabbar Youssef al-Sheikhli, Iraqi deputy minister of the interior for natural resources, was slightly injured in the morning blast. "The deputy minister's bodyguards fired at the vehicle as it approached the house, which triggered the explosion," said Kimmitt, deputy operations director for Multinational Force Iraq.

Researchers at Plymouth's Derriford Hospital and the Creutzfeldt-Jakob
Disease Surveillance Unit tested 12 674 appendix and tonsil samples. 3
showed signs of variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease [abbreviated as CJD (new
var.) or vCJD in ProMED-mail]. Extrapolating their findings to the whole
population, they estimated that 3800 Britons may harbour the disease. These
findings are published in the Journal of Pathology.

A total of 141 people have died from vCJD in the UK since the disease
emerged in 1995. Scientists have been suggesting that the number of deaths
from the disease had peaked. A recent study by researchers at Imperial
College London predicted the disease would claim fewer than 540 lives.
