Sounds like complete bullshit to me- certainly modern self loading weapons require an adapter at the muzzle to ensure the weapons fire properly with blank ammo. And even a private could tell instantly whether the belt or clip (yes, for a garand, we say clip) he was handling contains live or blank rounds.
I call bullshit.

Also having experience with BFAs and having fired lots of blank and live ammunition, I agree. You'd have to be a complete imbecile not to know the difference.
