CLEARWATER POLISHES ITS ALL AMERICAN PRESENTATION
The city has become a finalist for an award that recognizes cooperative efforts to make progress.
Clearwater is one of 30 cities that have been named finalists for the designation of All-America City.
The award is passed out every year by the National Civil League, a Denver-based think tank that promotes efficient government.
Ten winners will be declared in mid June. Before then, the city has to convince the NCL judges that they are the best in the bunch, which includes South Florida's Lauderhill, Pembroke Pines and Pompano Beach. Other finalists include Stamford, Conn., and Cottage Grove, Ore.
"It's an effort to recognize communities where people are working together in a proactive, thoughtful and constructive way," said Chris Gates, president of the NCL.
All finalists are asked to send a delegation to the June 10-12 final selection competition in Atlanta. Judges will hear each group's pitch and then decide winners on June 12.
Clearwater is poised to send 17 or 18 people - possibly including a spoken-word poet from North Greenwood - to convince the NCL that they are the best.
"It's a three-day process that consists of a community expo where you showcase your city," said Doug Matthews, the public communications director for Clearwater. "Obviously, you want to have representatives indicative of the breadth of the partnership. You want to have the right people."
Clearwater hopes to win by focusing on three things: the Hispanic Outreach Center, the library's GOALS program (a youth reading and tutoring effort) and the revitalization of the North Greenwood area.
Each of those programs relies upon the joint efforts of businesses, city government employees and volunteers, a major criterion for award-winners.
"It's how the community as a whole gets together as a whole to solve a problem," said Matthews.
The National Civil League was created by Theodore Roosevelt in 1894 and has been giving out the All-America City Award since 1954. In addition to the awards, the NCL promotes good government by conducting research and publishing a quarterly journal.
The NCL designation does not mean a community is perfect, said Gates. But it is a boon to the city.
"This is a boost both internally and externally," said Gates. "This is the Good Housekeeping seal of approval for a community. It says this is a place where people worry more about solving problems than who gets the credit. Internally, it's a helpful reminder to a community that as tough as their challenges might be, that somebody from outside has recognized they are making progress and doing good things."
---------------------------------------
FV SAYS: "they are making progress and doing good things?" Not in the rule of Terri's case. Clearwater doesn't deserve the equivalent of a good housekeeping seal of approval.
Terri's rehab money is gone and she's in isolation. What, 37 days now, since MARCH 29 / Monday pm

bumping & pinging this again. Email gchandler@ncl.org if you feel that the City of Clearwater DOESN'T DESERVE THE DISTINCTION OF "All American City" and tell them about Terri Schindler-Schiavo.
How can Clearwater get an award for civic responsibility and human rights when one among us is being HELD HOSTAGE?
Please forward this thread to your non-freeper friends. Wake up Clearwater and stop ignoring Terri...

Looks like this award is like an Academy Award for Cities. CLEARWATER WANTS TO PUT ON A TUX AND SHINE THEIR SHOES and really wants to win this award. Terri's trying to WIN HER VERY LIFE and Clearwater showed it's indifference by their silence.
Email: gchandler@ncl.org if you don't think Clearwater deserves an award based upon excellence in civil rights and civil conduct...

In this context. Band Hell on Earth announces they are giving a concert where there will be a Suicide on Stage. The Mayor of St. Petersburg said NOT IN MY TOWN, JUDGE LENDERMANN quickly did an injunction, NOT IN MY JURISDICTION. The Florida House & Senate just passed a law banning SUICIDE ON STAGE.
Over in Clearwater, Florida, there's nobody standing up re: Terri and saying NOT IN MY TOWN. None of the Judges hearing all of Terri's cases are saying NOT IN MY JURISDICTION. And the local news media continues to protray Terri as "hooked up to machines".
THE CITY OF CLEARWATER HAS NOT EARNED THIS AWARD. If the City Press Person is going to announce they are up for the award, we have a right to express our opinions that Clearwater has a dirty little secret. The objective is 1. Terri's civil rights are zip 2. Fill in the blanks for the National Civil League on the underlying issue - a worldwide negative view of the City of Clearwater and of Pinellas County, Florida for JUDICIAL BUNGLING AND DISCRIMINATION AGAINST Terri, i.e. violence against women. That's it imo.

Interesting to consider the following story and compare it to Mrs. Schindler's experiences of being TOTALLY shut out from seeing Terri.
This story posted to Free Republic -- Why did the St. Pete Times interview this CA mother?
'Tell him his mom is here' Some may think Susan Galleymore went to great lengths to check on the condition of her son and the war in Iraq. She doesn't.
By BILL DURYEA, Times Staff Writer
Published May 9, 2004
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Like a lot of parents, Susan Galleymore was nervous when her son, Nick, a 26-year-old Army Ranger with the 82nd Airborne, was sent to Iraq. Unlike most parents, she assuaged her anxiety by going to Iraq to visit him.
After the 10-day trip, Galleymore, 48, created a Web site (www.motherspeak.org) where she has recorded interviews with Iraqis and with other mothers of soldiers, both for and against the war. (She continues to post new interviews as they come in.)
Galleymore talked with the St. Petersburg Times about overprotective mothers, thinking for yourself, and how you can tell the difference between a concerned mother and a privatized military.
Times: When did you decide to visit Nick?
Galleymore: When he was deployed to Iraq I went into a lot of panic and not only that, anger, because I really believed that we had no right to go into Iraq in the way that we did.
It became a larger struggle to understand what my child would be doing over there, but also how to cope with the stress of it. I'm a single parent, so I don't have someone I can talk to about it.
I realized if I was going to stay relatively sane I needed to get help. What are other mothers experiencing? From there it became: What's going on with Iraqi mothers?
A military friend of the family told me that I could go to Iraq. He said when he was in Vietnam, there were a couple of times when parents showed up in Danang, where he was base commander. Obviously the military leadership don't like it, but they also can't tell you not to come. So I said, "Well, all right then." I had everything worked out within 10 days.
Times: Did you tell Nick to expect you?
Galleymore: He was on e-mail, but he was not getting information from me as quickly as I was developing it. When he did hear about it, he tried to discourage me. He didn't say I couldn't visit him. He just said, "Don't come to Iraq. It's too dangerous."
Times: Do you have a history of dropping in?
Galleymore: No, I'm the opposite of a protective mother. I grew up in an English household. We're very reserved. People have assumed I'm a woman who can't let go of her child. That's not the truth. The truth is, I'm a woman who's very concerned about the state of my child's health and the health of other children.
Times: It sounds like you're an independent thinker and fairly adventurous.
Galleymore: And I act on my principles. I needed to know what was going on there so I could make a stand, one way or the other. I was not able to do it with the information I was getting.
[SNIP]
Galleymore: I told him we were concerned about him, that his family loves him, we want him to be safe and healthy. I told him I want him to be aware of what he's doing in this country.
[SNIP]
Galleymore: He was one part of the mission. There were two other arms of the mission. It was hard. You don't know what your kid is going to be up to, whether you're going to see him again. I was very grateful that I had seen him. It's hard to leave your kid behind in a place like that.

Prayerfully posted. The goal, the NEED, is to get Terri released to her family's care.

"People have assumed I'm a woman who can't let go of her child. That's not the truth. The truth is, I'm a woman who's very concerned about the state of my child's health"-- all should have been in bold.
May God give Terri's family wisdom in all they do, in all the decisions they must make moment by moment. May they KNOW that they are NEVER alone, there is NEVER a moment that someone somewhere is not lifting them up in prayer.

This is Terri's 42nd day of forced isolation from her parents, siblings,
priest, those who love her and her 1491st day confined to just a single
small room by Hospice of the Florida Suncoast (give or take a few days
of having to be in the hospital from neglect and almost being
dehydrated/starved to death).
Just when you thought the bottom of the barrel was being reached. now there
is a fax from Michael Schiavo's attorney Deborah Bushnell that the
Schindlers could be permitted to visit their daughter if they pay for an off
duty police officer to accompany them (arranged by Deborah Bushnell & Co. of
course):

Re: Schiavo, Theresa - #1834 -Guardianship
Dear Pat:
I received your fax dated May 4, 2004.
We inquired of Hospice as to whether they would allow their
security officers to be in the room during Robert and Mary
Schindlers' visitation. To date, we have not received their
consent to this arrangement, and it does not seem likely that
such an arrangement can be made with them in the near future.
In the interim, the Schindlers may visit Terri in the presence
of a security officer. However, we would have to make private
security options. If your clients are agreeable to paying the
cost of such supervision, please let us know, and we will
follow up to make arrangements for the visitation and let you
know the cost.
Sincerely,
<signed>

Terri is denied any extensive/comprehensive range of motion therapy or any
kind of therapies that could make her better. Terri is not terminal yet
Michael Schiavo is trying hard to make it so. AHCA's April 1st investigation
didn't see anything wrong with Terri's teeth yet shortly after their
investigation 5 teeth were completely removed from her mouth, with no
restorative work considered. How could the AHCA not have noticed anything
wrong? The surveyors notes of this investigation are a must read. They show
to what lengths Hospice of Florida Suncoast, Michael Schiavo, etc. are going
to deceive investigators to cover up the fraud and criminal neglect they are
committing upon Terri, the people of Florida, United States and the world.
The AHCA appears to be complicit in aiding and abetting these crimes. These
Chapter 119 documents are available upon request.
There is a big question: WHAT ARE YOU AND YOUR FEDERAL AND
STATE GOVERNMENT OFFICIALS DOING ABOUT BRINGING THE
PERPETRATORS TO JUSTICE? Contact the senators for your district and
ask them what can be done, there are any number of actions that can be
taken.
Contact as many people as you can (governmental and non-governmental)
about Terri's plight. Make stickers, bumper stickers, licence plates,
posters, etc.
Be creative, do take action.
