When I went to school in Arizona, my mother my sister and I ate at Denny's. Seated right away and got excellent service and this with my mother who is of a dark coloured persuasion with a white waitress. Then I went to eat with a group of black kids and well I've never witnessed such crude treatment in my life. When I called to complain about the service, the manager started ranting and raving about negroes and I said 'thanks' and hung up *LOL*

That's not the first time I've heard that about black people being bad tippers. This is just my opinion but I really think there's a mentality of paying money to people who they perceive as getting paid ALREADY. As for students (who are often lacking in finances) people should understand that. If I can't tip someone extra, I usually say it up front that I have no extra money to tip.

I know this is a little (a lot?) off the subject, but I just has to grin when I read these lines. My step-dad(RIP), who was a lovable old bear, had this darn near homicidal "mentality" about buying ice! You know, the big bags you can buy at the gas station and Wal-Mart and stuff? "Why should I pay someone for something I can make at home?!" yada,yada,yada

I remember days and days before they'd give a party, my step-dad would be grimly freezing and storing trays and trays...and trays of "homemade" ice cubes. LOL! One man's determination to break the stranglehold of "Big Ice".

My wife and I waited tables for a couple years during seminary. Much as I affirm and believe in racial harmony and reconciliation and recognize that there has been terrible discrimination (and still is in some cases) toward blacks --- There seemed to me to be tendency on the part of some black patrons in restaurants to work the h*ll out of white waitstaff then leave little or nothing for a tip. Most white waiters/waitresses who have served blacks, I would dare assert, have been on the receiving end of some racial remarks or treatment.

Racism, boorish behavior and bad manners can be indulged in no matter what your color.

That perception is wrong. My son partially worked his way through college by working at a posh restaurant. The waiters were paid practically nothing by the restaurant, their pay consisted almost entirely of gratuities.

Apparently restaurants are exempt from minimum wage laws in regard to their waiters and waitresses. Since learning that I always tip 20% unless the waiter/waitress was rude or the service was lousy.
