"the Forbes family became known in China during the Opium War in the 19th century as the 'Opium Dynasty' or 'Poppy Dynasty' and also by a poetic turn of phrase: 'The House of Forbes - Rests on Water - Dreams of Opium'."

"Naushon Island has been a Forbes family retreat for some time, where the opium trader John Murray Forbes and his family summered for more than a century."
Boy, the parallels with the Kennedy Crime family just keep popping up!! The Kennedys only ran whisky out of Canaday during Prohibition though. Got them a few compounds though...
To: Redcoat LI
The island is owned by the family and they pay little or no property taxes as the use of the island is deemed agricultural by the local authorities. Taxes are for the "little people."

The Forbes Crime Family dwarfs the Kennedy Crime family, they could have easily poisoned hundreds of thousands of lives in the Opium trade.

Weird. I'm guessing that if Steve Forbes ever captured the GOP nomination, this would be the central theme of the press coverage of his campaign.
It really shouldn't reflect poorly on Kerry, since he's a self-made man.

"His first cousin, Brice Lalonde, an ecologist, is a French politician who was a candidate for [President] of France."
Well THAT 'splains his new, dorky look...and why Queen's Bicycle is running through my head. And just lookit those toothpick-like arms and legs!

I love the training wheels. The tee shirt the dork is wearing is from the University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee. A second tier state university.

Sounds like a property tax loophole that desperately needs to be closed (or at least exploited by the Republicans to illustrate the Left's hypocrisy)!

"It really shouldn't reflect poorly on Kerry, since he's a self-made man."Sure. All self made men spend their youth yachting with John F. Kennedy, go to boarding school in Europe, prep schhool in Boston and have the connections and sponsors to buy a successful political career.

It's easy to pooh-pooh John Kerry's humble origins, but You're overlooking the initiative, hard work and dedication it takes to marry a wealthy heiress. (Twice!)

To get to the island there is a ferry from Woods Hole but it is private and only available to the family. If you have your own boat you may drop anchor in one of their harbors. Fishing is fabulous. Bass and bluefish. Accomodations on the island aren't luxurious and there are lots of deer with ticks. Lyme disease is all over the area.

Word on the Cape is that although they couldn't stop him from coming, the other Forbes who summer on Naushon hate to see JF'nK coming.

Really?
I am assuming you need prior permission to visit one of their harbors.
The ticks are really bad around here this year.

Boston Brahmans. I have several hundred Paine cousins by marriage; also Perkinses and Forbeses. The Paine money comes mostly from General Paine, who was the youngest general in the Civil War and served as governor of New Orleans. He was involved in railroad mergers. Two of his sons were the Paines who won the Olympic rifle and pistol events back in the early 20th century and were portrayed in that movie about the Olympics.
Many of these people were involved earlier in the Chinese Clipper trade. I have heard it mentioned that opium was probably one of their more profitable cargoes.
Most of these people are perfectly decent and some are good friends, but living on inherited money is not the best recipe for the good life as prescribed by Aristotle. Fortunately I never saw any Paine money myself.

I didn't notice the training-wheels until the third or fourth time I looked at the pic.

Many of these people were involved earlier in the Chinese Clipper tradeIn it's earliest stages, the China trade was mainly Luxury items such as Silk, fine porcelain,etc..
The Opium trade was conducted in China,so any trans-Atlantic Clipper trade was clean.
Most of these people are perfectly decent and some are good friends
I'm sure they are,I in no way meant to insinuate that all people of this background are corrupted by dirty money,I just wanted to point out that holier-than-thou John Kerry is.
