Ah, the NY Times....... they just don't understand.....maybe I can help.......IT'S A WAR!!!!!!

They are just reporting a simple fact that anyone, who knows anything about war, knows to be true, i.e. accidents happen and there's collateral damage.

I can't help the fact that I was born here. I don't agree with the politics of the NY Times. If I post articles of the Times that involve politics, then it's either to expose or mock them. That doesn't include OpEd columnists Bill Safire or David Brooks who are not lefties by a long shot.

Why did you need to make that remark, because it's from the Times or New York? Be advised that the rest of the the world looks at America the same way that America looks at New York. Just look at how the NY Yankees are hated.

and is equipped with a 25mm GAU-12/U Gatling that allows it to fire from a greater elevation and slant range than the earlier versions

Plus, it just looks so freaking cool:

GAU-12/U 25mm gatling cannon (1800 rounds/minute -- 30 rounds/second) with the Western Design 25mm Ammunition Storage and Handling System (ASHS).

Note that 25mm is just a hair shy of a full inch in diameter. It's hard to grasp the scale from the above photo, but those are *huge* rounds to be raining down at 30 rounds per second at a velocity of 3500 feet/sec... That's enough to ruin any terrorist's whole day.

The gun portion itself (i.e. barrels, etc.) is 83.2 inches long (almost seven feet), if that helps give a sense of the scale of this beast.

Why is the Navy involved in this?

My best guess involves that the Navy keeps at least one aircraft carrier battle group in the Persian Gulf at all times, and that the 1st Marine Division, which is back in Iraq, includes an air wing, which can be based on land or sea.
