Even if we were totally self-sufficient with respect to materials and manufacturing, there is no way the government can provide security and materials to every citizen. The government doesn't have any money. They can only spend the money they tax from us. We can do that on our own and without the overhead of supporting inefficient government workers.
Allowing our manufacturing base to die is foolish. Things that are necessary for the security of the country should always be manufactured on our soil and with resources that we control. To do otherwise invites blackmail from foreign owners of manufacturing and natural resources. OPEC oil is an obvious current example.
A recent article about the miracle of cheap Chinese manufacturing suggests that it is about to unravel. The phoney lockup between the Chinese currency and U.S. dollar is only possible with our ultra low interest rates. Once they start to climb, dollars become interesting to other countries. Just as it is stupid for us to put money in a savings account with nil interest, the foreigners have keep their money out. Raise interest rates and foreign money will fill our banks as they seek better return.
During the WWII, patriotism was at an al-time high with everyone getting involved in manufacturing for our troops. Posters of glamorous movie stars, Bob Hope visiting the troops, and virtually everyone involved in a positive war effort on behalf of their country. Our country buzzed with productivity and the nation appeared to be of one mindset. God help us get back our power and stand up to those who would destroy us (be they activists or terrorists).
