I totally disagree. The OTHER strategy would lead to lots of dead marines, because it would likely take the 80% of the people who are for us, in some respect or another, and make them enemies. This is hardly what the attempt to democratize Iraq is all about. Oh, and 3/4 of the city is already under control and operating normally. It's one small quadrant---somewhat like East LA.

I have to believe that Bush has been advised by commanders in the theater before making this decision. Having said that (and I am not a military strategist by any means)I think we may be employing some psychological games on the rags by giving them the oft repeated impression of us being soft and weak. Let them think that.Bush is one great poker player. He's patient and he can wait it out. If we can win this operation by being patient as well as being strong why not? It may not only save many Marine lives it could be the turning point in this war and then perhaps we could start getting more cooperation in the Sunni triangle.

This plan has been working marvelously. The insurgents are in a panic, looking for propaganda assistance from Al Jazeera.

There are cameras EVERYWHERE in that town, just waiting to capture one of our bombs blowing the arms off some kid. That is their only hope.

We will kill the insurgents one by one, while the others hear their screams.

"I think our forces are more than adequate at this point in time.. "

...and your expertise is ... to explain how a thousand Marines can take a defended street fighting city? I'm sure Bush took the Military's decision and not yours.

We want to kill the bad guys and scare the [rest]

I wonder how many on this thread now think Hiroshima and Nagasaki were mistakes because they would make it more difficult to win the hearts and minds of the Japanese people and world opinion.

Rule Number One: When you send in the United States Armed Forces, send them in with a clear objective and no holds barred to win. Otherwise do not send them into harm's way.

Why bomb Fallujah if it can be brought to fall into our hands with little or no violence?

Remember, every family in Fallujah had one or more relatives in the Iraqi army, and they know that when we promised to spare their lives if they would but come up out of their trenches, lay their weapons aside and put their hands on their head, we did so.

These guys may not like us ~ probably never will like us ~ but they have every reason in the world to respect us.

We have to play on that. After all, they know that we can kill everybody, but they've seen that we don't lie about our intentions.

Its weakness pure and simple

There is nothing 'pure' about your assumption of the worst with this single headline.

It does, however, reveal that you are a bit 'simple,' and ready to draw impulsive and illogical conclusions with insufficient evidence.

(And anyone who still thinks Commander in Chief Bush is 'weak' makes me laugh).

I care about Republican voters (especially women) who, weak as they often are, are needed.

Ahem, excuuse me!?

This Republican woman doesn't consider herself weak and I know many others on this board and elsewhere who are strong beyond measure.

Just to set the record straight.

I don't need koolaid, friend. I have a 22+ year Navy career, a stint at War College and common sense to help me form opinions.

You?

So everybody else should just shut up, right? I'm glad views such as yours have been repeatedly rejected since 1776.

And there you have it. Nobody in the town can leave. The heroic fedayeen will be picked off in a very non-heroic manner by Marine Snipers. Some will try to get out. We will set up ambushes for those that do try to get out.

They will die.

Be Seeing You,

Chris

I didn't say you or the other women here were weak (in fact, I specifically disclaimed that). I mean those, out there. You must know the type I speak of.

"NOW it's Vietnam."

I'm afraid so. That's the thought that immediately crossed my mind when I saw the headline on Drudge.

My second thought was: "If we are not out to win, why bother? So the Europeans will like us? So the muslims will like us? Why kill one American when the plan is not to win but to make friends?

I will keep repeating what I have been thinking lately, At least Bush is not Bill Clinton. That's something.

Is it too much to ask that our soldiers or Marines enter the mosques and seize the weapons stockpiled there? How stupid do we have to be?

The reason people bring up Viet Nam is the "stupid is as stupid does" factor seems to be rearing its ugly head. I remember the "we'll play by the rules and they kill us at their leisure" crap of Viet Nam. Somebody needs to be damn careful about this.
