Any article on the decline of science in the Moslem World, which ignores the genocidal policies of the Mongols, who swept through much of the Asiatic population centers, is naive in the extreme. The population of Iraq, today, for example, simply cannot be compared to the population of the region before 1400.

This certainly does not mean that the people cannot better themselves. But it certainly rules out their achieving the sort of culture--not that they seem to want it--to which Americans have become accustomed. (Of course, every people's culture reflects the people who created it.)
