I agree. I saw the film this weekend, and didn't see any of the "hero deconstruction" we've been hearing about for a year and a half now. I saw believeable story of real, simple men who faced overwhelming odds, and died for their beliefs. The film in no way "deconstructed" those heroes, though I was disappointed that Goliad was ignored as it was.

Goliad was filmed but cut from the movie, I think....original cut was 3 1/2 hours long, (understandably) Disney made him cut it.

Yep, I saw the movie and I frankly think the people behinf the various conservative lets-bash-the-Alamo-movie didn't even see the same film. (Of course, some of the bashers, like Mr. Idiot Joseph Farah, actually DIDN'T bother to see the movie at all.

It had flaws, not a "Great" movie, but I felt it showed flawed but heroic people. And it was moving. Shed a tear during Travis' speech.

However, it's clear people were simply just waiting and drooling and hoping to bash this film as PC and Leftist and be outraged by it, and it had to fit that "expectation", regardless of what the movie was ACTUALLY like.

Travis'speech was as good a war speech as I have ever heard. I believed every word of it. I also liked the exchange between him and "Bowie". Bowie said if he had five more years Travis would have been a great man. Twenty-five more years and he would have led the men of Texas into battle against the North. But I loved his reply:"I'll just have to settle with who I am now." That is how we should all face death.

Travis' speech was a moving scene. I was impressed with the guy who played Travis...(Patrick?) Wilson. He and Billy Bob Thornton did a much better job than did Dennis Quaid and Jason Patric, though they certainly weren't bad.

I think what the flap over The Alamo demonstrates is that the Left doesn't have a lock on knee-jerk stupidity. I have been, and still am a reader of WND, but my opinion of Joe Farah has definitely been downgraded based on his criticism of the film, apparently without having seen it first. I guess some folks would rather see the heroes of the Alamo elevated to comic-book status, not unlike Hellboy and The Punisher, which sadly drew much, much larger audiences this weekend. Personally, I found it more inspiring to see Crockett, Travis, Bowie and Houston as regular men, who overcame their shortcomings and fears, and did what had to be done. That's real courage, not the larger than life image that Thornton's Crockett spent the entire film trying to come to grips with.

Scouts Out! Cavalry Ho!
