Local Woman Returns Home From Iraq Sgt. Garcia: 'Iraqis Do Want Us There'
An Army sergeant who spent more than a year in Iraq is waking up at home.
Sgt. Gerrie Garcia arrived at the Sunport Monday much to her family's delight.
Garcia spent the past 15 months in Iraq with the 358th Civil Affairs Brigade. Her family said the unit helped rebuild hospitals, roads and schools.
Garcia said she is grateful to be home, but she also said she is glad she went.
"The media is portraying a negative view, and there's a lot of positive things there that are going on," Garcia said. "A lot of Iraqis do want us there and they do love us. It's just a small proportion that don't want us there."
Garcia said she would do it all over again.
Her mom said she is looking forward to feeding her daughter some New Mexican home cooking.
