The king of the wild frontier was also a champion of limited government.
The new Disney film "The Alamo" has revived interest in Davy Crockett, the frontiersman-turned-celebrity who then entered politics and thus became an early American version of Arnold Schwarzenegger before he died fighting Santa Anna's legions in 1836.

Thanks for the post, Elle Bee.
The full chapter from The Life of Colonel David Crockett that relates this story Fund tells in summary form has been posted several times here. It probably needs to be posted again.
Here's one I had bookmarked, posted by OWK back in 2000 -- when we had other things to discuss than war, outsourcing and John F. Kerry:

The thing I hate most about Billy Bob Thornton being cast as Crockett is that Crockett was a very handsome man. Billy Bob cannot be described in that manner. Plus, they show him surrendering in the movie. That "fact" is based on a forged document. I curse Billy Bob, Quaid and Hancock for allowing that to be in the movie. I hereby revoke Quaid and Hancock's Lonestar Passes!

The movie is bombing. I love that.
