Some eastern Iowa parents feel they're treated with hostility because they refuse to immunize their children. They've discovered that saying no to vaccines means that pediatric offices can say no to providing care to their children.

At 19 months old, Ambryia Mulnix has never felt a needle poke into her skin. Her mother, Arielle, says she's done her own research and comes to this conclusion on vaccines. Arielle told TV9, “I don't feel there's a need for them. And I’ve seen it can cause deaths too, so more safety, and my belief." But she soon discovered her belief shuts out pediatric care for Ambryia. Arielle says, "I’ve been turned down at pediatricians, I can only go to the emergency room, or family doctor."

Iowa Health Physicians Clinic has had a policy for three years now, it does not provide routine, pediatric care to non-immunized children. Ken Anderson told TV9, “It comes from the feeling that the immunizations are so important to children that it's such a strong feeling of ours, that if we can't come to an agreement of that fact, we feel it's unlikely we'll be a match on many other things."

Arielle says, "It's hurtful because I’d rather not be judged on my belief and what I believe is best for my child." As a result, Arielle uses her health insurance to cover emergency room and urgent care center visits when Ambryia's sick.

Arielle feels fighting off infections will only make her baby stronger. But pediatricians see it differently. One doctor says, “The germs are out there, and your body has to be able to fight it, if the body comes into contact. The immunizations are a way for your body to recognize that in a very safe way."

But this mom feels her beliefs, even if it means no pediatric care, are the safest for her child. “It's better than getting pressured into getting her shots, and not being judged going in there."

Mercy Care Community Physicians do not have pediatricians, but say their family doctors provide routine care to non-immunized children.

The pamphlet, and the doctor, promoted the vaccine as beneficial to working parents who could not afford to stay home from work while their children were in quarantine.

That was the very first argument I was given in support of the chicken pox vaccine. As a stay at home mom, I decided against it for my kids. But my oldest son never got chicken pox at all, so I vaccinated both kids when my oldest reached 11. I figured the likelihood of my youngest encountering someone with chicken pox was nil.

My best friend's mom is the head nurse at the Pediatric Unit where I had my older daughter in Cleveland. She said NOT to get the shot for my newborn. I moved to MI and it was law.

Now I homeschool and neither of my children will have another shot. Sorry, MMR & DPT from aborted babies. Can't do.

As someone who has had the chicken pox at age 33, all I can say is RUN, don't waste time walking, to get the vaccine! The doctor told my parents, when I was 11, that I had most likely caught a very mild (unnoticable) case from my 8 yr. old sister who did have it, and would be immune from any future possibility of catching it. He was wrong.

Our kids never had chicken pox but through the years, they were around other kids who did have the pox. They came home with every other virus going around school, so I can't imagine how they missed this one. : )

My suspicion (not conspiracy theory) is that the new requirement for proof of CHICKEN POX vaccine is not for the public welfare. I can't prove it. I don't know the reason for it.

What possible "other" reason could there be?

You keep ignoring the fact that trained physicians are almost unanimously recommending this vaccine. If "the government" has ulterior motives for pushing this vaccine, why are the doctors going along with it?

And your "suspicion" that drug company profits is driving this is indeed a conspiracy theory, considering the number of people necessary to be involved.

You are right; eventually that 'critical mass' will be reached. And with all the immigration, new strains of old diseases, as well as diseases that are new to the U.S. that are cropping up, it will happen. Also, how many illegals are adding to that 'critical mass', but out of sight. It may happen sooner than we think.

Is this a bad time to mention that closing the boarders *might* be a good idea?

But it is the doctors that recommend and administer the vaccine. You are saying they are either dishonest and in the pocket of vaccine manufacturers or stupid. ~ TomB

Just a thought:

The manufacturers don't see the sick children, all they see is the money.

The Doctors see the sick children, and no-one who cares enough about children to go through everything they have to to become a pediatrician wants to see sick children. A pediatrician doesn't have to be in the manufacturer's pocket, or stupid to want "his" or "her" kids to be healthy.

I will NOT vaccinate my children, and I am not an ignorant parent.

In most states it is NOT mandatory, but public officials lie to parents. I did my own research, found out that "mandatory" shots are NOT, and did the appropriate paperwork to get them into school.

My highly intelligent nephew began having seizures within minutes of a DPT shot, stopped talking, and is now a developmentally disabled 20 year old, who functions at the level of a three year old.

Not vaccinating is a religion - as indicated by her terminology. She "did her own research" - meaning, I presume, she checked out Internet websites. There are a lot more quack sites out there than there are legitimate sites, and the uneducated have difficulty discerning the difference.

When my 14-year-old was young, they were not sure about how long the effectiveness of the vaccine would last. I didn't want her growing up and contracting the disease while she was pregnant, so I opted for a natural immunity. She got chicken pox along with half her first grade classmates.

My son is five years younger. By that time the vaccination was more mainstream, so I opted to have him vaccinated. I have always seen to it that my kids received their vaccinations on schedule; I've never been one to follow junk science or questionable studies. But I still wonder if I did right by my son. I still think a natural immunity is better. I guess we'll find out when he's an adult.
