Parents Who Choose Not to Vaccinate Children Upset with Some in the Medical Community

Friday, April 09, 2004, 9:49:53 PM

By KCRG-TV9 News Anchor/Reporter Renee Chou – TV9 Cedar Rapids Newsroom

Some eastern Iowa parents feel they're treated with hostility because they refuse to immunize their children. They've discovered that saying no to vaccines means that pediatric offices can say no to providing care to their children.

At 19 months old, Ambryia Mulnix has never felt a needle poke into her skin. Her mother, Arielle, says she's done her own research and comes to this conclusion on vaccines. Arielle told TV9, “I don't feel there's a need for them. And I’ve seen it can cause deaths too, so more safety, and my belief." But she soon discovered her belief shuts out pediatric care for Ambryia. Arielle says, "I’ve been turned down at pediatricians, I can only go to the emergency room, or family doctor."

Iowa Health Physicians Clinic has had a policy for three years now, it does not provide routine, pediatric care to non-immunized children. Ken Anderson told TV9, “It comes from the feeling that the immunizations are so important to children that it's such a strong feeling of ours, that if we can't come to an agreement of that fact, we feel it's unlikely we'll be a match on many other things."

Arielle says, "It's hurtful because I’d rather not be judged on my belief and what I believe is best for my child." As a result, Arielle uses her health insurance to cover emergency room and urgent care center visits when Ambryia's sick.

Arielle feels fighting off infections will only make her baby stronger. But pediatricians see it differently. One doctor says, “The germs are out there, and your body has to be able to fight it, if the body comes into contact. The immunizations are a way for your body to recognize that in a very safe way."

But this mom feels her beliefs, even if it means no pediatric care, are the safest for her child. “It's better than getting pressured into getting her shots, and not being judged going in there."

Mercy Care Community Physicians do not have pediatricians, but say their family doctors provide routine care to non-immunized children.

You do NOT want your son to contract chicken pox as an adult,

Glad you said this. "Chickenpox" as an adult is called "shingles" and is a serious, painful disease which persists a lot longer than the few days of inconveience which childhood chickenpox involves.

No caring parent would attempt to prevent their child from chickenpox when it is a relatively insignificant inconvenience for a few days. In fact of course, if your child was "exposed" to chickenpox for any length of time, s/he probably is in fact immune.

This Mom is an uneducated idiot! Just wait until the diseases that have been vanquished by vacination reappear to carry their children off, or worse, cripple them for life. It may work for awhile, but it will come to a disaster.

The arrogance of physicians is amazing.

Yeah, it really is, sometimes. In fact it may only be outdone in this world by the arrogance of ignorant parents who think because they figured out how to slip it in, they have all the answers to the world's problems. Now THAT is TRULY amazing.

there are lots of cases of children getting autism and not having the MMR. My son with mild autism started unusual behavior at ten days, way before any vaccinations. I believe there are many causes, and different expressions, and genetic susceptibility is a big part.

Fair enough. Perhaps you've been lucky in more ways than one. Like I said, my children have been immunized, but I still don't trust the AMA. Never will. I still think that there is something fishy going on with autism being as prevalent as it is. My guess is that it is the immunizations causing it.

In the future we may prove the cause. I believe in the future, it will be discovered that the AMA was negligent and allowed thousands to become autistic and to have other serious side effects from their FORCED injections.

I will certainly aid the efforts of the plaintiffs.

You can count on that.

Why have we not seen studies that compare the health of non-vaccinated children with vaccinated children?

So why don't you post these studies right here? There is no lack of bandwidth, like in the old days. Just post any studies RIGHT HERE. Thanks!

Now answer the question, what happened in 1999 that made MMR "safer"?

I think they took the mercury out of it. Is that right, to finally answer your question?

You tell me, since you are the expert.

"I will certainly aid the efforts of the plaintiffs."

I don't think I have to be a legal eagle to say: if you sincerely believe in your cause, misguided as it is, you'd be more helpful sitting at home than in the courtroom.

btw, are you suggesting that only gays and IV drug abusers are at risk for blood borne pathogens??? that kind of thinking fueled the aids epidmeic.

So what percent of Americans with AIDS are neither gay nor IV drug users?

Good luck breaking single digits.

So, do you think that the state should FORCE parents to immunize their children irrespective of the debate? I'd like to know what you think.

I've read THOUSANDS of you posts, and I'd like to know if you think the state should FORCE parents to have their own flesh and blood injected with foreign substances in order to qualify for attendance at a school for which they are FORCED to pay for.

Thank you.

My brother, 51 years old, had an episode of numbness in his extremities a couple of years ago. That gradually went away and he returned to normal. Then, suddenly, six months ago he went into a crisis with a huge spinal inflammation that left him paralyzed in all by his left arm. He was in ICU for days on massive steroids.

He is now better, but under going therapy four times a week. He still has numbness and burning pain from the nerve rejuvenation process. The docs are evaluating him to determine him for MS diagnosis.

But, what is puzzling to him, when he spoke to me of it, was that every single doc asked him if he had received the Swine Flu immunization.

Yall remember that, those who are older. It was under the Ford administration that rushed the vaccine in some sort of political grandstanding. My Mother told him not to take it, as she did not trust it, but he did.

Funny that that should be on a doc's questionnaire of medical history, no?

Yes. I'm not against necessary vaccinations, but rather the lies and obfuscation that accompanies them. (Like that they don't cause autism.)

My biggest beef is that they are FORCED, under the gun. ALL state and federal laws are FORCED Under the gun.

In general, and if possible, the best route is to exercise, eat some fresh plants every other day, and avoid depressed Liberals.

Enjoy life!

So, do you agree that parents should be FORCED at gunpoint to immunize their children?

So, do you agree that parents should be FORCED at gunpoint to immunize their children?

Again, no.

Irresponsible parents should be given vouchers so that their non-immunized children can cluster together, rather than parasitizing off of the herd immunity provided by the immunized children of responsible parents.

Why shouldn't that be acceptable to immunization-averse parents?

Do you remember the Swine Flu immunizations?

Sure do. Studied the political process in college. Might even still have the text around somewhere,

Is there a pertinent point?

No. But YOU believe this, and the fact that you don't care about these children reveals a lot about you.

Yep. Some vaccines were and are preserved in a solution that is nearly 50% methylmercury or ethylmercury. I guess for some it depends on what is an acceptable(as far as number of children) amount of debilatating neurological disorders

First it's not THERE ANYMORE. From CDC

Thimerosal is used as a preservative in some multi-dose vials of vaccines to prevent contamination. Preservatives are not required for vaccines in single-dose vials. As a preservative, thimerosal is added at the end of the production process to the bulk or final container to prevent contamination after multi-dose vials are opened. Today, all routinely recommended licensed pediatric vaccines that are currently being manufactured for the U.S. market are free of thimerosal as a preservative.

Second. You grossly overstate the mercury content. While Thimerosol is 50% mercury, the CONCENTRATION in the vaccines of thimerosol is around .01 % or 1 ONE HUNDREDTH of ONE PERCENT. From CDC info.

Get your facts straight.

No. But YOU believe this, and the fact that you don't care about these children reveals a lot about you.

Where is the courage of your convictions?

Why would you not want your children to be surrounded by other non-immunized children?

Why do you prefer your children be kept around immunized children, like mine?
