Former Cowboy arrested for appearing to be under influence of drugs01:15 PM CDT on Friday, April 9, 2004
By ERIC AASEN / The Dallas Morning News
Former Dallas Cowboy Dimitrius Underwood was taken into custody Thursday night for appearing to be under the influence of drugs, Dallas police said.
Police discovered Mr. Underwood, 27, in a stalled Ford Thunderbird shortly before 9:30 p.m. at the 8900 block of Stemmons Freeway, according to a police report. Mr. Underwood showed symptoms of a drug-induced pscyhosis, police said.
Police dispersed five rounds of pepper balls at Mr. Underwood after he wouldn't exit the vehicle, police said. He was taken to Parkland Memorial Hospital's psychiatric ward.
Mr. Underwood couldn't be reached for comment.
The former defensive tackle was arrested in late 2002 on charges of robbing a paraplegic and assaulting a police officer. He was deemed incompetent to stand trial by a jury last year.
Mr. Underwood suffers from bipolar disorder, or manic depression, a medical condition that can be treated with medication. His contract with the Cowboys expired in 2001.

What a loser. I just moved from Dallas to Charlotte. When I was in school, every once in a while we would see Cowboys out on the weekends.
They are just a bunch of thugs.

It would appear that he is trying to come out of retirement and rejoin the Cowfelons.

A felonious Cowboy? Tell me that it's not true!
Seriously, I miss Tom Landry.

Not surprising. He had a pretty clear chemical inbalance (either inherent or induced) when he played at Michigan State. One day he was found in downtown Lansing, wandering around, mumbling to himself. His problems greatly pre-dated his time with the Cowboys.

They are just a bunch of thugs. Those days are over, in the Parcells era. I don't remember Underwood, and I'm a Cowboys fan.

you are not arrested for APPEARING to be under the influence of drugs.
Nice choice of words - must be written by another lawyer?

Seriously, I miss Tom Landry. Landry ignored drug use. Remember Hollywood Henderson?
Jimmy Johnson came the closest to having a drug-free team.

As a longtime Los Angeles Ram season ticket holder, I take pleasure over anything that brings pain to the Dallas Cowboys. The Cowboys are my second most hated team. The first? The Rams.

I think in this instance, his bipolar disorder and chemical situation is not normal. Although you may not like the Cowboys, I don't think this man's personal problems are a reflection on that organization as much as a serious medical condition. Bipolar Disorder is an ugly thing. If you don't take your meds, it is scary.

Tom always looked sharp in his suit and hat. However, you are right, the Cowboys were drugged up thugs under Landry. But they were America's Drugged Up Thugs

A felonious Cowboy? Tell me that it's not true! haha ! Whut I thought when I first heard this. ;^)
Seriously, I miss Tom Landry.
My sentiment as well. What a man ! May he rest in peace.
And when Jerry Jones bought the team, it was all downhill from there, imho ...

When I saw he was bipolar, I resisted the usual comments
regarding Dallas Cowboys arrested for drugs when I posted this. I'm not real up on 'bipolar' folks except my good buddy's Mom is
a nurse and I've heard her talk about it. Not an easy thing to deal
with as I recall. Hope he can get help/relief.

I remember it affecting his draft status, so it was pretty serious even then. He had first round talent, but was expected to go in the late second or third round. The Vikings took a chance on him late in the first round.
