Cain highlights GOP meeting By Mark Lastinger

THOMASVILLE -- U.S. Senate hopeful Herman Cain's booming voice delivered a passionate speech that resonated strongly with Second District Republicans Friday night. He received a standing ovation after outlining his opinions about leadership to a large crowd at Glen Arven Country Club.

Second District Republicans are in town to elect three delegates and three alternates for this summer's Democratic National Convention in New York.

"One of the goals we all have as leaders in the Republican Party here in Georgia and the Second District is to re-elect George W. Bush as president in November," Cain said in a serious tone before adding a touch of humor. "We have a second goal in November, which is to elect our second Republican (U.S.) senator from the state of Georgia (to join Saxby Chambliss). For those of you who do not know who that should be, I have a suggestion if you would see me after (my speech)."

Cain, a native Georgian and businessman trying to make headway in a race that includes U.S. Reps. Johnny Isakson and Mac Collins, displayed fervent support for Bush and his policies, especially those on terror.

"I'm glad we have a president who had the leadership courage to take the war on terror to the terrorists rather than waiting for the terrorists to bring the war here like they did on 9/11 in 2001," Cain said.

Cain said his opinion on the fight against terrorism was impacted by a meeting he had with former Israel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

"He said two things about terrorism," Cain said. "Number one, he said it is here to stay. It is not a screen play like some in the Hollywood crowd might think. You can't all of a sudden say, "Cut," and rewrite the script and have a different ending. It's here to stay, and that's why we must have the vision of leadership to do everything we can do to fight and win the war on terror.

"Netanyahu also told us the terrorists have only one objective -- they want to kill all of us. When the terrorists flew into the towers in New York on 9-11, they weren't trying to kill black people, white people, Jews, Catholics or Baptists. They were trying to kill anybody who salutes the flag of the United States of America. If we have never been united, we'd better get united against the terrorist forces that are trying to destroy all of us."

Cain's other topics included restructuring the tax code and Social Security. He received the greatest applause after discussing traditional American values.

"This week, there is a gentleman -- and that's being gracious -- who is before the Supreme Court challenging the wording of the Declaration of Independence where it talks about we are endowed by our Creator. Well, I don't know about you, but I would trust the founding fathers to know what they were doing before I would want to trust some nut who wants to take God out of our culture," Cain said.

Cain called the crowd to action.

"I believe we will win this moral war because we must win it," he said. "We are all soldiers in this war. We can't just delegate this to our president and our religious leaders.

"If we do not win this war, this nation will go adrift. When you go adrift, you drift to nowhere."

Following an 8 a.m. breakfast at Quality Inn, the Second Congressional District Republican Convention will continue today at the Central Middle School Auditorium. Several GOP candidates for local and statewide offices will be on hand, including the Rev. Mike Keown. He recently announced he is running for the newly created Post 173 seat in the General Assembly.

Sen. John Bulloch and Rep. Ed Rynders were among current state officeholders in attendance Friday night.

Let's hope Cain can send Isakson back to Cobb. Isakson and his cohorts of Dem light politics is why Bush cannot get judicial nominees through. If you are a GA republican who do you want voting on Bush's judicial nominees, politics as usually Johnny, or Herman Cain.

This is about the future of Georgia politics, as well as the nation. Cain, not only has the conservative fire in his belly, he can heal some old wounds and be an example for black conservatives across the state who must know they are in the wrong place. Oh well, lets just vote for Isakson, and add him to the 70 carbon copies of him already in the Senate.

I encourage EVERYONE to look up his events schedule at http://www.hermanCainforUSsenate.com and see him speak in person. I have seen/heard him several times now and I can NOT get tired of listening to his message.

You also have to see and listen to the reaction of the crowd as he speaks. I followed him to several District conventions last weekend and boy am I motivated to get Herman Cain elected! Standing ovations all round. Roswell was the most surprising since its deep in the heart of Isakson's current district.

We MUST Hermanate Georgia!

I think the Cain campaign may need more people who are familiar with building a real grass roots campaign. Grass doesn't grow without seeds. I am more motivated than most, and it took me 2 weeks to get someone from the Cain campaign to call me, and all he really did was say "check the web site".

You guys need a volunteer co-ordinator and a set of leaders who can get out the support. When someone like me leaves a phone number, they need to be called back as if they are customers in a business. How many businesses are successful when their customers have to beg to buy their product (okay it works for Ferari, but not much else). There is a concept called a phone tree. When Cain goes to speak in that area, you activate the phone tree and call people who left their number and invite them to the event.

I finally saw Cain in person, and there is now a small yard sign in my front yard for all my neighbors to see.

The man is IMPRESSIVE! After years of having to stomach Johnny Isakson style stale bread Republicanism, it is exciting to have this spicy meatball. I can imagine the building pressure inside the Isakson campaign as he gains traction. Just meeting the man earns instant converts.

Isakson may be right for the the apparently more left leaning Republicans in his district, but the rest of Georgia's republicans want a conservative. When the word gets out that Herman Cain is here, its just a matter of time before he is the presumptive nominee.

I am a believer! Go CAIN!

Hi,
I am not a staff member for the Cain campaign and I can not address your question but I apologize for the delay in the campaign staff getting in touch with you. The good news is that the campaign is overwhelmed by the support statewide and there are some teething problems as Georgia realizes that Herman Cain is the man!

I am however a believer! I am a grass roots activist for my area and we have several team leads in my county spreading the word.

The campaign is picking up key grass roots activists all over the state including some key players in the last gubernatorial and senate races in middle and south Georgia who have switched support to him. A few of us up here just took it upon ourselves to put out signs, distribute flyers, share videos, inform people when he is in this county or nearby so that they can bring some people.

The campaign just needs good true believers to become activists for their area if possible. Every little helps.

Davy

I like Herman Cain. Either he or Mac Collins will receive my vote in the primary.

Are you working with a contact with the campaign? I hope they have a volunteer coordinator. Grass roots grow better with fertilizer and watering. When people sign up to volunteer on the web site, I hope they have someone contact them, and not expect spontaneous activist combustion. When he comes to a county to speak, they should send out a notice via e-mail or phone trees to inform people in the area so the turnout is standing room only. Charisma and ideas can only get you so far, leg work wins the final battles.

Cain has a minor mountain to climb over the Republican penchant for selecting the next in line, and Isakson grabbed his number over a decade ago.
