KARACHI - At least 10 gunmen stormed into a police station in the southern Pakistan city of Karachi last night, killing five policemen and wounding one after demanding that the officers recite Islamic verses.

The attackers escaped by car after the attack, about 5km from the international airport.

Karachi is Pakistan's largest city and the scene of frequent religious violence.

The assault, one of the boldest on Karachi's police in years, comes as tension is running high following a deadly raid by thousands of Pakistani troops on 400 to 500 suspected al Qaeda and other Islamist fighters last month.

The wounded policeman, Hasan Jatoi, said the clean-shaven assailants shot several of the officers in the head after bursting into the small police post.

Karachi police chief Tariq Jameel said: "It's an act of terrorism.

"The police are conducting operations against terrorists and this could be a reaction to the operation."

It was not clear which group was behind the attack, he said.

Police tightened security at police stations across the port city of 14 million people.

Earlier yesterday, four men suspected of involvement in the Madrid train bombings, blamed on al Qaeda, blew themselves up after they were cornered by police in an apartment block in a suburb of the Spanish capital.

The explosion killed a Spanish special agent and injured 11 police, and followed a shoot-out between officers and the alleged terrorists.

Police units arrived at a flat in the southwest suburb of Leganes in search of suspects for the March 11 bombings, which killed 191 people and injured 1800.

Spain has already charged 15 people, 11 of them Moroccan, over the atrocity.

Yesterday's events came as the Independent on Sunday learned that Britain's security agencies are hunting for a suspect known as "The Recruiter" who is enlisting British Muslims for terror attacks.

He is thought to be a British citizen who received military training in Afghanistan or Pakistan and may have fought in Afghanistan with the Taleban.

Also yesterday, Scotland Yard obtained permission to extend its time to question nine British men, all Muslims of Pakistani origin, who were arrested last week in a series of raids during which half a tonne of ammonium nitrate, a fertiliser used to make bombs, was found.

The arrest period for the men expired yesterday, but police obtained an extension until tomorrow under anti-terrorism laws.

Actually, this displays a high degree of religious conviction. I believe there are stiff penalties in the Koran for not allowing believers to pray to cleanse themselves before killing them. Even the most heinous murders are given the opportunity before executions.

Something to think about on Islam. I ordered a free Bible, Qur'an, & The Book of Mormon over the Internet. I have received all three. The only one I have not read is the Qur'an and that is because it smells of oil and death. When you open it the smell overwhelms you and makes you ill and want to throw up. None of the other books do, I figure that is because they preach peace, good and wellbeing. I do believe that the copy of the Qur'an I received is a perfect example of the Islam religion, it stinks and only represents death and evil.

KARACHI, April 05 (Online): Five police personal including a sub-inspector was killed and another injured when unknown armed men attacked Gulistan-e-Johar police station near Karachi airport on Sunday morning. An attacker was also reportedly killed in counter firing by the police.

According to details about ten to twelve armed men raided the Gulistan-e-Johar police station and started open firing

As a result five police officials including sub inspector Umeed Ali Mirani, four police personal Sarafraz Ali, Muhammad Ismael, Muhammad Ashfaq and George died on the spot. Another personal Muhammad Hussain was also injured in the incident. Reports said that an unknown man possibly one of the attackers was also killed in cross firing.

Eyewitnesses told that the attackers used automatic weapons during the attack and later fled away from the scene. However, DIG Operations Karachi, Tariq Jameel informed that the attackers took hostage an injured man and a search operation has been launched to hunt them.

The dead bodies of firing victims have been shifted to Jinnah hospital.

Soon after the incident, IG Sindh, Syed Kamal Shah, DIG Karachi and Rangers officers reached the police station and collected information from the eyewitnesses including those who were locked in police station.

Meanwhile IG Sindh Syed Kamal Shah giving details of the incident said that the incident happened at 4:45 in the morning when unknown armed men opened indiscriminate firing. He said according to preliminary investigation about 10 to 12 people were involved in this incident.

He said a head constable Muhammad Hasan, who was preparing for prayers in a near by mosque was also injured in cross firing.

Syed Kamal Shah further informed that the mosque was also damaged due to indiscriminate firing by the attackers. He said investigations into the incident have been launched and culprits would be apprehended soon.

Meanwhile, Governor Sindh Dr Ishrat ul Ibaad has slammed the attack on Gulistan-e-Johar police station that resulted in killing of five police men on Sunday.

He directed Inspector General Sindh Police Syed Kamal Shah to arrest the culprits at the earliest.

?You should go all out for arresting the culprits who are behind the assassination of five policemen and bring them to justice,? he maintained.

KARACHI: Funeral prayers of the two firing victims being offered at the Police Headquarters garden. Early Sunday morning unknown gunmen attacked at Gulistan-e-Johar police station and killed five policemen including a sub-inspector.

Governor Sindh also gave directions in regard of provision of assistance to the families of the deceased policemen.

Provincial home minister Aftab Ahmed Sheikh expressed the hope that the culprits involved in killing of five police personal at Gulistan-e-Johar police station would be apprehended soon.

Talking to reporters here on Sunday he said that senior police officers were trying to ascertain whether the incident has any link with various terrorist activities, Wana operation or reaction of the arrest of Mohajir Qaummi Movement (Haqqiqi) Chairman Afaq Ahmed.

The suspected Suzuki car bearing number, AB-9683 was confiscated by Police patrolling team, which have a three bullet mark and some red patches, which Police suspected were the blood clots of injured assailants in cross firing of Head constable, Muhammad Hussain.

Police has also recovered two Russian hand grenades at some distance from the police station.

Meanwhile, Namaz-e-Janaza of killed police staffers was offered.

Besides people from all walks of life, Interior Minister Sindh, Aftab Ahmad Shaikh and Inspector General Police (IGP) Syed Kamal Shah attended the Janaza procession.

The dead bodies of killed Police cops were wrapped in national flag and were later dispatched to their hometowns.
