I'm guessing you haven't visited there, either. Native Costa Ricans are much lighter-skinned than the Nicaraguans who live to their north.

There was very a very small native population of Indians when Costa Rica began being colonized. There is probably more Swiss blood in the population than Indian although there is some Nicaraguan influence.
