Yep, they won't let me forget that one for a long long time. I have three dogs. They are great fun.
I love cats but don't own any due to allergies. Hubby says we can't have an outdoor cat b/c they lead very hard lives.
I would like to own a parakeet again. For being tiny, they are very smart. The trick is to only own one at a time, if there are two of them, they bond to each other and ignore their human owners. There was a bird store near me once that sold "hand-raised" parakeets, but it now only sells much larger birds.
I remember once my kids won a goldfish. It had some horrible condition that made its tail and fins deteriorate. I called vets and pet stores for advice and they told me it was pretty much hopeless. Thinking it would be a good learning experience for the kids, I explained the whole thing to them and then flushed the fish down the toilet to put it out of its misery, with them watching. Both kids were crying and carrying on. It was bad! I regretted it so much. They were very upset with me. If I had that to do over, I would just flush the poor thing, get rid of its bowl, buy a new fish, new fishbowl, new gravel or whatever they call the stuff on the bottom of the fishbowl, and never tell the kids a word.

It can be so hard to be a mom sometimes! I hate the "death" part of pets. Even a goldfish.
I do NOT like birds, but my grandma, many years ago, had a parakeet named Tweety and we all loved him/her. He/she would talk to us when we visited. I haven't thought about that for a long time. It's a good memory.

FYI: A lot of people who are allergic to dogs in general are not allergic to poodles as the hair is different.
Thought you might want to visit someone who has only poodles and see if you have problems. OTOH, some people don't count poodles as dogs....
