Calling Mel Gibson "a tortured soul," France's main Jewish group accused his film about Jesus' final hours of having anti-Semitic overtones.
An umbrella group for Jewish organizations, the Representative Council of Jewish Institutions of France (CRIF), said Thursday that "The Passion of the Christ" was a backward portrayal of Christian teachings. The movie debuted Wednesday in France.
"The film's violence is extreme and sick," the group said in a statement. "Unfortunately, (CRIF) finds elements of anti-Semitism in the film, which was clearly conceived by a tortured soul."
Some Jewish and Christian leaders have expressed concern that the movie could revive the notion that Jews collectively were responsible for Christ's death.
France has faced anti-Semitic violence for more than two years, with many attacks targeting Jewish schools, synagogues and community centers.
CRIF noted that it had not asked for the movie to be banned, out of respect for freedom of expression.
Three Jewish brothers argued before a Paris court that the film would foment hatred of Jews in France and asked that it be banned. A judge rejected the bid Monday.
The movie, which is showing in more than 500 theaters across France, carries a ban on ticket sales to children under 12.
But what really bugged me was when I heard Jackie Mason spouting the "antisemite" line. He actually claimed that this movie might cause antisemitic outbursts in Europe--as if Gibson put all the Muslims there in the first place.
Jackie Mason. That was the worst. I'm just crazy about Jackie Mason.
You said it right: you and I will never see them in a shul. I have no idea why they even consider themselves Jewish.
Why not? The are your philosophical bretheren.
Once again you try and cannot think straight. You made a statement that was too strong, as is habitual with you: you are not... very logical, let us say, and like putting feet in your mouth.
It is impossible to be antisemitic and Christian,
This statement is universal, not qualified by time, goegraphy, or anything else. Any counter-example is valid.
Moreover, in contrast to you I did not make any statements: I asked a question, giving you an opportunity to withdraw or modify the original statement. Instead you come out with discussing "the Jews who point out..."
Not very bright. If you don't like shoving feet in your mouth, then don't. But in your apologetic stance for the Church and in your prejudice you simply go too far. Every time.
The only thing illogical is your need to delve into ancient history to prove your point. You're question is irrelavant, get it, and it is a pretty typical one from Jews who fear the Gospel (such as yourself) and also Protestants who hate Catholics. Its nothing new. The defenders of Catholicism hear it all the time. The Catholic Church has been around for 2000 years, but it is comprised of ordinary men. There have been some good ones and some bad ones. Those who would persecute others are not adhering to Christ's message, so they are not Catholics. But, as I very logically pointed out, the morality and the philosophy of the time was very different. So was man's concept of humanity and his fellow man.
As I have pointed out to you many times, you ask these silly questions, and you hurl your childish accusations for one reason: For you, religion is about an unhealthy fixation on old injustices instead of a more wholesome intercourse with the Lord.
Can't resond one time like an adult, without a silly little dig, can you? The term philosophical breathern is entirely correct. You just miss the point. You and Abe Foxman share the same Peter and The Wolf complex.
Thank you for showing us once again what kind of person you are. Your world is clearly divided into Catholics, Jews, and Protestants, with the latter two groups trying to eat you alive.
Rest assured, as much as I am an evil, dishonest, rich Jewish banker who tries to subjugate the world and kills Gentile children to make matzos, neither I nor my other fellow Jews are after you. Nor are any of the Protestants.
Perhaps we should be: for not knowing the difference between "you're" and "your." That deserves an auto-da-fe. Where is the Inquisition when you need one?
Simply untrue. The reality is actually that your world is divided into Jews and gentiles. You have referred to yourself as a Jew. I use that information to put your distrust for the Gospel into context. You fear it, because you have not bothered to comprehend it. I would help you with that ignorance, but for some strange reason, anytime a Gentile recalls the fact that you are Jewish, you immediatly assume that that observation is antisemitic. It's realy quite bizarre actually. Which leads us to your hallucinigenic fantasies...
Rest assured, as much as I am an evil, dishonest, rich Jewish banker who tries to subjugate the world and kills Gentile children to make matzos, neither I nor my other fellow Jews are after you. Nor are any of the Protestants.
When have I ever given any indication that I believed any of this stereotypical hack nonsense (hint: never). It is nothing but paranoia that makes leads you to believe that whenever a Gentile notices your Jewishness he must be harboring some inner hatred. All of this is going on in your head, not mine.
Perhaps we should be: for not knowing the difference between "you're" and "your."
It has been my observation that typos and spelling errors are the last refuge of the intellectually impoverished.
Yeah, I'll take my Christian theological teachings from Jews. They certainly know best.
If "tortured soul" is the prerequisite for earning $300 million this year (before taxes), then my soul is going on the rack.
Who was the church father you're alluding to?
St. Cyprian, as Bishop of Carthage, demanded that all Jews be expelled at the point of the sword. (c. 250-8).
Thanks for your critique fellas.....much appreciate it.
....however, the sobs emanating from others around me made for a much more profound 'review'.
I found it to be the spiritual equivalent of a lightning strike.
"Backward?" Is that to say "Old fashioned?" "Traditional?" "Scriptural?" I say "Bring it on!" Yeah, baby! Give me that old time religion!
TQ is so desperate to prove that Christianity causes antisemitism that he goes back 500 years to find an example.
