The liberal media is pushing these guys so hard as "the alternative to conservative talk radio". What I think is funny is that they never pushed "conservative talk radio" at all when it was getting started. Even now, with 10's of millions of listeners, Conservative talk radio barely gets any recognition or publicity from the media, yet liberal talk radio who has all of 5 listeners(at a retirement home somewhere) is getting boomed all over magazines, newspapers, and television.

It's a good thing there were so many paragraphs in this article.
I had to stop to laugh between each one.
"The gloves are coming off on talk radio." Hahaha!
"We're not in regime change radio," he said.

Air America is armed with $30 million in investor cash and a $30 million credit line being used to lease AM stations in New York, Chicago, Los Angeles and San Francisco, with more stations promised.
What's funny is their promotion that they are going to compete with conservative radio. If that were true, they would have done it without the fanfare and 30 million investment. This is nothing more than a 60 million dollar John Kerry ad.
They can't compete, not because they aren't allowed, but because they fail at honest discussion. Listeners won't remain listeners for long. I just wonder how long they can Salon themselves.

In truth, the serious-minded Pacifica network and segments of National Public Radio have already staked out liberal positions. Gasp! Andrew Stern and the print media has stumbled upon the truth.

"We're going to listen to (Limbaugh's) show and hold him up to scorn and ridicule," Franken said in a telephone interview. So that's this moron's lame plan? Let Rush do a show and use it like a color commentator does a football game? Sounds stupid and illegal ( something like fair use ), but the left never cared about much about that.

The network will also feature other radio neophytes such as actress Janeane Garofalo, rapper Chuck D and activist Robert Kennedy Jr. Each will be paired with a radio veteran. Not enough brains to fill a gnat's navel.

If it was "speech" radio they would hold their own.
But when you get calls to refute your arguments and are forced t defend your positions, I don't think the liberals will hold up very well. - tom

While I was weeding yesterday -- exactly this occurred to me:
We're going to listen to (Limbaugh's) show and hold him up to scorn and ridicule," Franken said in a telephone interview
In backbrain, I suppose I was wondering exactly which doctrine Franken et al were going to pursue.. And on a breeze, I heard whispered: They are going to follow the Dean Doctrine of attacking Rush Limbaugh (and morph out with their usual anti-Bush, anti-Republican stuff).
What else have they got? It's like watching the movie "Poltergeist II"; in which the little girl revisiting a "reincarn" memory -- explains why the people followed their zealot leader to their deaths: She sniffles: "They had no where else to go...".
I hope that conservatives will have fun with the Franken shows, as opposed to being angry -- I bet some of the satire and parody on Rush's show goes to the top in humor!!. My concern is for the tender souls who have been so heartened by Rush. I hope they will simply let the bad "air breezes" brush on by, and not feel compelled to be outraged and hurt. They need to recognize, Rush is not going to change, and nor is he going to be reactionary to their program. Rush believes in solid competition. And in merit. The point of the Franken show is to create bitterness in Rush listeners. It's the ole' "stick a foot out as a person walks by" trick. And, further, if one listens to the show and angrily reacts, it boosts the Franken show ratings. It's all about ratings, truly. And Franken et al are going to work very hard trying to woo what they consider the "ANGRY" "HATEFILLED" right wing.
Further, I have no doubts some Dem/Lefty seminar callers are going to pretend to be Repubs and get really nasty at Franken. Political theatre: Art (in radio) imitating real life.
Me? I'll stay tuned to El Rushbo, and catch wisps of "bad air" floating on by as I stay abreast of current "market" trends. :)

"Liberal talk radio" is NOT news.
You and I have subsidized liberal talk radio for years.
It's called NPR, National Public Radio and the Corporation for Public Broadcasting. "The Diane Rehm Show", "The Tavis Smiley Show", and "Fresh Air" with Terry Gross are as dreadfully liberal, as much as Rush and Hannity are conservative and even more partisan. Garrison Keillor's "A Prairie Home Companion" isn't a talk show, but it routinely has parodies and skits that ridicule conservatives.
Funny thing is that the liberals require federal and state subsidies and contributions from tax-exempt, left-wing endowments, and still must resort to begging to pay for this stuff.
Audience is not sufficient either size or quality to support liberal programming with ad revenue.
I'd wager that, when the newest entrants in liberal talk radio fail on commercial stations, they will demand a revitalization of the Fairness Doctrine to assure them air time regardless of their commercial viability.

Franken is what he is, a buffoon who can't find his niche in a world of sensible people. So, instead he surrounds himself with those like he is, he dribbles downcourt and falls on his face ending up looking like the fool he is.

What the heck is taking them so long? They have been yapping about this for months. Get on with it! Hurry up and crash and burn. The only ratings boost they will get in the first few months will be from conservatives tuning in to find out how lame it will be. That's why they plan to parody Rush, to go after some of his audience and probably to draw next-day responses from the Maha Rushie.
Reminds me of a song: "What shall we do with the liberal radio, what shall we do with the liberal radio ... take no [Kerrying] notice of them, take no [Kerrying] notice of them ..."
