I'm neither good looking nor photogenic.
IMHO, neither am I. Why don't you let me be the judge (of you, that is)?

Do I need to clear out the old cookies for DNS to work, or does it just need more time? Based on my experiments of manually editing my hosts file to get freerepublic.com back working (how I first got back here yesterday before JohnRob fixed the IP cookie issue), you won't need to clear out the old logon cookie.

I'll bet that this has already been said, but I don't fancy reading all 700+ posts to find out ;-). Why don't you switch to one of the big, reputable (reliable?) registrars. FWIW, My company's been registered with the original,
Network Solutions for over 10 years with no problems anywhere near the magnitude of having the routing turned off completely "by accident." They might charge more, but I opine that the community here would gladly pitch in to make up the difference.

My pager isn't working at all!IP-based pager semi-fix - this will detach the pager, make at least "New State Messages" work (though apparently not "New Messages to You") and send you back to the start of this thread.

So that what caused it?
To: bogdanPolska12
There has been DNS denial attack on major DNS root servers. I haven't seen anything about that here.

There has been DNS denial attack on major DNS root servers. Some of major web sites are down still ....some are not effected. It looks like attacks are going in channel mode, which means one server receives attack and spreads out to other servers.
Interesting. From about 2pm yesterday until at least 3am this morning I had hugh problems logging onto AOL. This morning it works fine. :knocking wood:

Why do I keep getting the following on my screen, but when I go to FreeRepublic.file I do not? "freerepublic.file"? Hmmmm.

Ah. Threw me a curveball, did you? ;)
Anyway, that .info URL works because John specifically set it up in the aftermath of this thing to be a separate domain registration that still points back to freerepublic. So becase it's a separate record, it's not affected by any problems that might strike the main FR record, nor do any problems with it affect www.freerepublic.com. All freerepublic.info does right now is serve up the same website as www.freerepublic.com.
Basically, it's a means of redundancy at the moment, although the way I read it, eventually freerepublic.info will be devoted to status information for www.freerepublic.com - i.e., in the future, if you're having problems with FR, you'll be able to go to www.freerepublic.info to find out what the problem is, or if it's something unique to you, or whatever.

As for when we're back up, the best answer is from
general_re - whenever your ISP's DNS server gets updated. Personally, I think ICANN is slow-boat-to-Red-Chinaing this based on essentially no one has goten the .com addy working without creating their own personal DNS entry.

Didn't CNN or some major site temporarily lose their email this way? I know maybe a year or two ago, Microsoft's Hotmail was down for about half a day simply because someone at Microsoft forgot to renew the domain name. A Hotmail customer actually paid it himself and got the service started again. I think he got a $500 reward from Microsoft. I'm telling this from memory so some or all of this may be incorrect.

The domain is registered until September 2006. There is no reason to call on it in March 2004. THe mistake relating to one piece of contact information is a bogus excuse. This was deliberate action by somebody. I'm inclined to agree. Some leftist at the registrar was probably gloating to himself that he could shut down Free Republic for a day or two.

That addy was used for e-mail, not to serve web-pages (washingtonpost.com is the domain that serves web pages)
I don't recall the MS Hotmail event, but that doesn't mean it didn't happen.
